Cricket in 2009 is going to be very interesting because after 16 long years there is real competition to top the cricket ranking with India and South Africa putting themselves in a position to end Australia’s domination at the top.
Having been at the top of the chart since the ICC introduced the Test ranking system in 2001 Australian faces a real danger of being demoted from the top slot for the first time.
India emerged as the ‘Team of the year 2008’ according to some elements of the British media because India is the country which really challenged Australia with some scintillating cricket.
They really played good cricket throughout the year, winning quite a few matches and giving everyone run for their money.
It all started when India toured Australia when given better luck with some of the umpiring decisions India might have defeated Australia in the 4 Test match series held in early 2008. However their aggression paid off when Australia lost badly (2-0) when they toured India for the return series in October and November 2008.
South Africa cashed in on the situation and went on to beat Australia 2-1, inflicting the first defeat on the Aussies in their own backyard since 1992 when they lost to West Indies.
India was the one which made everyone realize that Australians can also be beaten up and they continued to beat Australia from time to time with some aggressive cricket.
Unfortunately for India the year 2009 has not started on a good note as their three test match tour to Pakistan has been canceled, otherwise the results from it could have toppled Australia from the top of Test rankings in the start of 2009 itself.
But unfortunately this is not going to happen and India will play only two test matches in the middle of 2009 and a three test match series against Bangladesh in the end of 2009 thus giving them very less chance to get the top slot in cricket rankings this year.
Whereas South Africa has a real chance of getting to the top of the Test ranking as they host Australia in a three test match series which will be very interesting as it will give them ample opportunity to create history.
On the other hand, England has lot of cricket on hand as they play West Indies, home and away and later host Australia in the five match series, but they need to sort out the differences creeping into the team.
Besides this, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand and Pakistan also play a lot of cricket and one of them may also come up with some surprising results.
But above all let us not forget the Australian team who might just have the last laugh. As we all know that Australian have the best fighting spirit and they have plenty of cricket in hand in 2009 and more importantly they play their arch rivals England in 5 Test matches Ashes which might help them retain the No.1 spot in Test rankings.
So, there is plenty to look for in 2009 as far as No.1 spot in Test cricket as well as in ODI is up for grab after a long long period and not to forget the T20 World Cup in England which will be a mouth-watering stuff and will India be able to retain the T20 World Cup?
All this and much more to be seen and decided in 2009 and let’s debate and predict few questions facing the world of cricket this year:
1. Who will top the Test rankings?
2. Who will top the ODI rankings?
3. Who will lift the T20 World cup?
4. How will England cope up with their current problems?
5. What will happen to Cricket in Pakistan?
6. Will Ponting be able to hold reigns of Australian cricket?
7. Who will emerge as the player of 2009?
8. Will T20 take over Test and ODI cricket?
9. Will Ponting be able to break Sachin’s record in 2009?
10. Who is the captain to watch out for Dhoni, Smith or Ponting?
Have your say and enjoy the game of cricket.
