Brendan Shanahan a Hypocrite: Times in His Career When He Deserved Discipline

1 of 6

Brendan Shanahan, the NHL’s dean of supplemental discipline has been quick to hand out suspensions and fines to players in the 2011-2012 NHL season, but maybe he deserved some discipline himself.

Handing out 37 suspensions for regular season games this year, Shanahan is really cutting down on dirty play.

What if Brendan Shanahan played under today’s NHL rules?

Here’s a look at five of Shanahan’s dirtiest plays and how he would have been disciplined in the NHL today.

1998 Playoff Series Against the Phoenix Coyotes

2 of 6

This play occurs in the playoffs during the 1997-1998 season between the Detroit Red Wings and the Phoenix Coyotes. During a scrum with a couple players, Shanahan, along with the other players on the ice, threw multiple punches that seems as though his intent was to injure a player on the opposing team. Luckily no one was injured on the play.

Consensus: Brendan Shanahan will receive a call from the NHL as a warning, and will receive neither a suspension nor a fine.

Two Handed Baseball Swing

3 of 6

In this play, Brendan Shanahan got into a fight with Michael Sykora. Before the fight Sykora pushed Shanahan, a legal play in which Sykora is defending the front of his net.

Then Shanahan, with two hands, swung his stick at Sykora, hit him in the stomach, which stunned Sykora for a few seconds. Shanahan then dropped his gloves and proceeded to punch Sykora while Sykora is defenseless and unwilling to fight.

Consensus: Brendan Shanahan will receive a two game suspension.

Think Twice Next Time You Score an Empty Net If Shanahan Is on the Ice

4 of 6

After scoring an empty net goal, the Nashville Predators celebrated a two-goal lead that appeared to put the Red Wings out of reach. Brendan Shanahan, upset by the goal, skated into the circle of Predators, picked out Adam Hall, dropped his gloves, and punched him repeatedly.

With little time to react, Hall dropped his gloves and fought back against Shanahan. Hall was not injured on the play.

Consensus: Brendan Shanahan will receive a fine of $10,000 and a warning from the NHL.

Brendan Shanahan Makes Bryan Allen Part of a Rink Ad

5 of 6

In this play, Bryan Allen picked up the puck behind the net with his back towards Shanahan.

Clearly Allen is in a vulnerable position and Shanahan still made contact with Allen using his hands, not his shoulder. This sent Allen head first into the boards, a very dangerous play that the NHL is trying to eliminate.

Consensus: Brendan Shanahan will receive a three game suspension and will forfeit $10,000.

Keith Tkachuk Takes a Beating

6 of 6

In this play you can see Shanahan on top of Keith Tkachuk repeatedly punch him, while Tkachuk is on the ice in a vulnerable position. Tkachuk did not agree to fight Shanahan, yet Shanahan still threw punches at Tkachuk.

Earlier in the game,Tkachuk accidentally hit Shanahan with a high stick, and Shanahan’s actions are a clear response to the high stick that were taken earlier.

Consensus: Brendan Shanahan will receive a two game suspension.
