A hard fought performance Saturday was all for not as the Canucks let a tough one slip away against the Western conference leading San Jose Sharks.
The Sharks got two goals in the third period from captain Patrick Marleau to break open a 2-2 tie and escape with a 4-2 victory. The other Shark goals came from Rob Blake and Mike Grier, meanwhile the Canucks got goals from Mats Sundin (his first as a Canuck), and Daniel Sedin.
Tied 2-2 into the third period, the Canucks had the Sharks on the ropes as they carried the play through 40 minutes, outshooting them 24-17 and outchancing them in the second period.
On one side of the coin, this was a great game from Mats Sundin. He got a goal and could have had more if not for outstanding goaltending from Brian Boucher. On the other side, Curtis Sanford look quite sluggish all night, playing his first game back from injury, and appeared to be fighting the puck all night. He was at fault on the Sharks final three goals of the game.
The Sharks have now won six consecutive games over the Canucks as they improve to 32-5-5 and sit atop the Western conference. The Canucks fall to 22-18-5 as they blow another chance to gain ground in the Northwest.
The Canucks home stand continues Tuesday as the New Jersey Devils pay a visit to GM Place. It is widely expected that Canucks captain Roberto Luongo will return to action next Thursday against the Phoenix Coyotes.
