With the 2012 Big East Conference Tournament underway, the potential matchups could cause even the casual fan to salivate.

The Big East has four teams ranked in the national top 25, which has the potential to cause some of the most anticipated matchups of the season.

All of the following matchups would be Championship game material, but only one will actually come to fruition. We also can’t forget the sleepers that could bracket bust these possibilities!

#1 Syracuse vs. #2 Marquette

The No. 2 ranked Syracuse Orange could potentially face off with No. 9 ranked Marquette Golden Eagles in what would be one of the wildest Big East Championship games in history.

The teams met once during the regular season, with Syracuse coming away with the win. If Marquette can find their offensive touch and stick to their tough defensive schemes, they could shock Syracuse.

#1 Syracuse vs. #3 Notre Dame

The Orange have a tough road to the Conference Championship, but their talent is undeniable. One of the few teams that could stand in their way is the lengthy Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

With a pension for playing shut-down defense and smothering shooters, Syracuse knows that Notre Dame can beat them. In fact, the Fighting Irish are the only team to beat the Orange this season.

#2 Marquette vs. #3 Notre Dame

While this wouldn’t be in the championship game, the precursor to the matchup with Syracuse may be the best game of the tournament. With Marquette and Notre Dame each representing serious threats to the Syracuse Championship, the fight between them could be epic.

I expect both of these teams to be smelling blood in the water and fight each other with everything they have. By the time the winner goes to play Syracuse, there may be nothing left.
