LSU Football: 5 Funniest Things Les Miles Ever Said
Les Miles is the best interview in all of college football.
When he gets near a microphone, a memorable quote is on the horizon.
Miles has an unnatural ability of answering questions without answering questions, and he's smarter than most people give him credit for. When he wants, he puts words together that instantaneously become gold for the public.
Never short of giving a memorable soundbite, Miles is one of the funniest coaches in the nation. Because of that, selecting only five classic Miles quotes was quite difficult, but these are the quotes that were the most hilarious.
Honorable Mention: Mulling Around
“Yeah, we call that mulling around. Okay guys, come on now. What we’re going to do early in this game is mull around, okay? And later, we’re going call that monkey off our back play."
This is one of Les Miles many quotes were he goes with what the reporter is saying and displays just how ridiculous of a question it is.
In this quote, Miles talked about how he called the Rueben Randle play the "monkey off our back play" that would pick up the team after all of their "mulling around."
Even a sarcastic Miles quote can be a memorable one.
5. 2010 Tennessee Victory Reaction
“I’maa tell you right now as an experience, dammit, I’m going to enjoy that one as much as I hate to admit it.”
I was in LSU's locker room when Les Miles said this, and while it was awfully tense following a near debacle against the University of Tennessee, I couldn't help but laugh when he did.
Miles was questioned hard for trying to change packages near the goal line with the clock running out, and while the clock did strike zero, the Tigers were awarded another chance because Tennessee had 13 men on the field.
The Tigers escaped that day with the victory when Stevan Ridley rushed into the end zone for the game winning score. At first, I was angry with Miles because of the botched game management, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't crack a smile when he said this.
4. The Erin Andrews Conversation
“Ted, damned if I’m not impressed with your candor!”
The reporter asked Les Miles about being interviewed by Erin Andrews, and what soon followed was a hilarious conversation between Miles and the media.
As you can tell by his voice, the man asking Miles the question is pretty old, and the questions he began to ask Miles really caught Miles off guard.
After the reporter revealed that he's been looking through keyholes for years, joking or not, Miles responded to the reporter in the best way he could.
It was awkward, it was funny and honestly, it's what we've come to expect from the "Mad Hatter."
3. Watching Tape Is Like Reading Books...
"When I wake up in the morning and I turn that film on, it's like reading a book and it's exciting. I don't read books, but if I read books it would be like reading a book."
Only Les Miles would say this.
Miles comparing game film to reading an exciting book and then stating that he doesn't read books is exactly why we love him.
Personally, it's refreshing to have guys like Miles in the SEC, because when the majority of the coaches are stiff and strictly business, Miles reminds the media and the fans that it's okay to have fun in interviews.
2. The Events That Took Place Before Miles Tripped Against Alabama
"There was a contact between a football player and a cheerleader, male I might add. That male cheerleader clipped me from the side as I was running full speed or slower than full speed, but generally, in the upper quadrant of speed. And I hit the ground pretty good.”
I knew that we were in for a special night on Nov. 5, when Les Miles tripped as the Tigers took the field.
As if him tripping wasn't funny enough, the story behind it was hilarious... when told by Miles. A normal person would describe the event that took place by saying he was bumped by a male cheerleader who collided with a football player and hit the ground, but that's not Miles' style.
Miles painted a ridiculously funny visual with his story in a manner that only Miles could replicate.
1. Thank You Very Much, Have a Great Day!
“I got a championship game to play, and I’m excited for the opportunity of my damn strong football team to play in it.”
"Please ask me after. I'm busy. Thank you very much, have a great day!"
If you've followed LSU football at all during the past five seasons, you had to know that this would be Miles best quote.
After ESPN reported that Miles was heading to Michigan, Miles set everyone straight in one of the greatest interviews in college football history.
Everything about this interview was perfect, as Miles' words and demeanor showed the world how unique of a character he truly is.
