I made the three-hour bus trip from State College to Pittsburgh for the weekend, excited to see my brother’s basketball team take on the highly-ranked Jeannette Jayhawks in the second round of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) playoffs.
And, of course, I wanted to see Terrelle Pryor with my own eyes.
For months, I had heard about the 6-foot-6-inch quarterback from Jeannette High School who could run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds. The talk increased when he decided not to sign a Letter of Intent on National Signing Day.
A true athlete, Pryor had been dominating on the basketball court, while waiting to make a decision on which college he would attend. It seemed to be the general consensus that Pryor’s decision to take more time to pick a college was a good sign for Penn State.
On Feb. 16, I arrived at the Baldwin High School gymnasium with my family and the families of my brother’s teammates at about 10:30 a.m. for a noon tip-off. Spectators started filtering in shortly after, anticipating a sell-out crowd.
The South Fayette fans saw a hard-fought game, worth every penny of the $6 they paid to spectate. Both sides played their hearts out through four periods and overtime. In Pryor, they saw a tremendous athlete—fast, strong, and agile.
They also saw one of the most disgusting and, quite frankly, disappointing displays of unsportsmanlike behavior they’d ever witnessed. It started before the tip-off and lasted well after the final buzzer.
He never properly was rebuked for it by the refs or by his own coach. Perhaps it was because he is considered by many to be the Prince of the WPIAL, the Duke of High School Sports, or the Lord of Gridiron.
In any case, I can’t remember when athletic prowess became a free pass to act like a jerk.
Pryor taunted the South Fayette players/coaches with a condescending laugh as they filed into the gym for the pregame shoot-around.
His Royal Highness then took time out of his warm-up to threaten the South Fayette student section, comprised of no more than 50 students, one of whom was dressed like Ohio State football head coach Jim Tressel.
“I’m going to kill you, motherf*ckers. I’ll see you after the game."
At the end of warm-ups, Pryor threw a basketball into the student section, where it hit an elementary school student.
Although he was quite busy with a basketball game, he was kind enough to take the time to repeat this threat at the student section throughout the game.
As the starting lineups were called, all of the players shook the opposing coach’s hand—except Pryor. He pulled his hand away and turned his head as South Fayette coach Rich Bonnaure reached out to shake it.
On the court, Pryor scored 24 points and had 21 rebounds. He also used a variety of racial slurs against the player guarding him.
After the game, the teams lined up for the usual postgame handshakes. Pryor went down the line and said, “You f*cking suck” to all the South Fayette players.
He then went over to the South Fayette student section and continued his threat of bodily harm and invited them to meet him in the hallway after the game, until a Whitehall policeman told him to stop, and his teammates finally pulled him away.
It is disturbing behavior for such a highly-touted recruit.
Two South Fayette students were ejected from the game for swearing at the refs. Shouldn’t the players be held to the same standard of behavior, if not a higher one? I have attended dozens of high school basketball games, but I have never seen another player’s behavior even closely resemble that of Pryor’s that day.
Perhaps more disturbing than Pryor’s behavior was the fact that his coaches and the referees allowed it to continue.
As lifelong Penn State fans, my family and I were very disappointed by what we saw in Pryor that weekend.
Pryor is obviously an amazing athlete. Everything that has been said about his speed and strength has not been exaggerated. Yesterday, in the WPIAL championship game against Beaver Falls, Pryor came up with 39 points, 24 rebounds, 10 blocked shots, and 6 assists. The win came just two months after Pryor led Jeannette’s football team to a state championship.
His behavior, however, leaves much to be desired. We can only hope that it is not too late for Pryor to learn some humility and decorum in college.

If the South Fayette students weren't acting like jerks to him in the first place, then he wouldn't of gotten mad at them. Everybody knows terrelle pryor is an amazing athlete, and if he wasn't sportsmanlike than teams wouldn't be going after him. It was one game that a group of high school students taunted and made fun of him because of how he is. Get over it, he may only be 18 but he knows right from wrong.

It was not one game. His unsportsman like attitude is something ignored and allowed because he is that good. As for knowing right from wrong...did he learn that AFTER getting arrested at Kennywood last year or before? Nobody is taking away the fact he is a tremendous athlete, we were just hoping he would be a tremendous person.

I was at the game against South Fayette. South Fayette fans made racial slurs at TP the whol game, and he reacted. The rest is not true at all.

Wow, this is one of the more slanted articles I've read in years. It's so obviously untrue I can't believe people are taking it seriously. Pryor can't use the bathroom without being followed by reporters, there were nine trucks at the Fayette game. Do you really expect us to believe that every person there just glossed over Pryor's racial slurs and saying "you suck" to all of the opposing players after the game? I've read a lot of REPUTABLE sources that say the fans were being horrible to him and he reacted. Now, as someone said athletes are held to a higher standard than normal people and he shouldn't have reacted, but I can forgive him being still in high school. Based on what I've seen across the net, only the part about him talking to the student section and being restrained by teammates is true.
And do those who say OSU fans are bad, I guarantee that there's not a school in America that doesn't have A hole fans that yell and throw filfth, I don't care where you go, for the most part fans are fans, and 90% of them are good people who come to enjoy the game.

Well, while I agree that the article is obviously slanted, I don't see why she has to be called a whore, ugly or fat or whatever. Most people, including each of us commenting have likely gotten caught up in hype over something and not been very objective at some time; Look at the dispute over Kobe's deserving, or not deserving the MVP trophy. I think it's pretty cool that fans have an outlet where they can express their opinions and try their hand at being a journalist. It provides an alternate perspective from the mainstream media. To me at least, the more perspectives we can get, the better.
The purpose of Bleacher Report is not to replace mainstream sports media outlets, but to supplement them. If you don't enjoy reading an insider's perspective on Terrell Pryor's behavior, there are plenty of other websites on the internet where writing is restricted to "professionals" only.

It has been suggested that I comment on here to defend my article, so that is what I'm doing. First, I should point out that it IS an op-ed piece, not a news article, and that would explain the "slant". Second, if you feel that I am not a credible witness, fine. But I swear to you that I saw and heard everything that I wrote about. Terrelle Pryor is the probably the most amazing high school athlete I will ever seen, but I strongly feel that his athleticism does not excuse his behavior. The South Fayette student section could not possibly have been any worse to him than any other students he's faced this year. A kid was there dressed as Jim Tressel because he wanted Pryor to go to OSU (I should point out that the kid was a Pitt fan and therefore really just wants him to go anywhere but PSU). A lot of the younger students there were hoping to get his autograph after the game, but after seeing the way he acted to them, they changed their minds. I also heard a few more stories about Pryor's behavior that I did not add to the article because I did not personally witness them, including a story about how he was yelling at his teammates in the hallway after the game, after they had just won in overtime, and another story about his sophomore year when he ripped off his jersey and threw it at his coach for benching to give him time to cool off after receiving a technical.
And in response to the "Who's fans are worse?" debate that was briefly started up in this thread of comments, I think we can all agree that every college has fans who give the college a bad name. I assure you that at Penn State there were plenty of people who were unhappy about how the frat treated those OSU fans back in October.
All I can say is that I know what I saw and I know that Pryor's behavior that day was not the norm among high school athletes. None of his teammates acted like he did. Trust me, after the past two years with Anthony Morelli's less-than-stellar performance, I really really want Pryor to come to Penn State, but only if he can grow up.

Jessica, there is no use trying to give facts to some of these people. They simply don't want to hear them. They will defend a sports hero, regardless of the situation. This has become more and more common in our society until the athlete crashes and burns (see, O.J. Simpson, Barry Bonds, PacMan Jones, Mike Tyson, and recently Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire, Terell Owens, etc. etc.) Pryor is going to be a hand full for someone unless someone begins to call him on his behavior. I hope it happens, wherever he chooses to go to school, and that he becomes a great person in addition to a great athlete. Great job on the article.

I am a HUGE college football fan. I live in the midwest and my loyalty goes with a smaller MAC school I attended. However, I have two goals: Attend a game at every Big 10 and MAC stadium. I have 13 stadiums under my belt thus far, and over 50 college games in my life. With multiple games at PSU, OSU, UM, UW, I can say OSU consistently has the worst fans in the midwest. By worst, I mean rude, ignorant, and just plain jerks. I, for one, have welcomed OSUs success recently, because it shines the spotlight on college football in the midwest. Yet I cannot believe the chip on the shoulder of Buckeye fans, or there inability to grasp an historical perspective of the game. I have seen fights, vandalism, jerks, riots, the works at most of the places I have been at one time or another. But never with the consistency that you get in Columbus. Having also lived on the west coast for 2 yrs, I can tell you OSU has a reputation for two things: Great football teams, terrible football fans. You all need to grow up, you shine a bad light on the midwest.

I lived in Columbus for 5 years, attended games and spent time on campus, I now live in SEC country with rabid Alabama/Auburn fans and have gotten to witness that the OSU fans are no better or worse than at any other college. The few bad stand out and seem to get all of the attention and that is not only ridiculous but also unfair.

This is the THIRD independent article I have read about that game, and all have said Pryor acted like an a$$hole. The people on here who think because the opponents fans were taunting him his actions were warranted, what do you think will happen as he plays in bigger arenas and bigger rivalries? Seriously? You think they are going to toss roses at him? He is a jerk. He will fit in at OSU perfectly. I visited OSU's campus last yr, wearing a shirt of an opposing school, and besides the mean comments I was told to my face twice I should be killed. "Shot in the face" was how one student put it. The other was an older man, yet he still felt the need to tell me I should be killed. Nice school you guys run there in Ohio. What I can't understand is why all of you on both sides are so caught up in any of it. Whether or not he did those things means nothing. Your Universities already have people on there rosters that have done worse. Not to mention, none of you sound as if you've ever played high level sports of any kind.
I played football and basketball ( 1st team all division ) and f'd up my chance at college because of off the court issues, however, I remember when the worst thing I had to deal with was crazy soccer moms and "has-been" dads, screaming nonsense. Towards the end of my career though, it has become ridiculous how non-athlete fans like you guys take stuff way too far, out of some strange cult like obsessional loyalty to a University or Program, and use that as a subconscious justification to spark these "un"informative blogs of hysteria, that end up flaring up into gang like disputes with no real rational outcome other than wasting your breath and increasing the stress and pressure of the already obscene microscope. don't forget though, OSU's only pro qb, Troy Smith, was also a thug. He punched Ryan Autullo from behind during a high school basketball game, for which he was expelled from St. Edward (but OSU still grabbed him up!). And took money from an OSU booster (and still OSU let him play football!). Pryor is just filling the shoes of OSU's need for a classless quarterback.

UM's "great QB tradition" will end with Rodriguez because his offense has never produced and NFL quarterback.
Also, I'm not talking about a school that produces NFL backup QB's.....lots of schools can do that, I'm talking about consistently producing NFL starters. Michigan's claim to QB U is so out of line its incredible, sure you've had some good ones (Brady) and tons of busts (Harbaugh, Griese)

NONE of which came out of the spread-option system. so few actually bother to note that fact. scUM will no longer produce pro qbs. due simply to the fact of offensive system.

He won the NFL passer rating title in 1995 at 100.7. In January, 2005, Jim was inducted into the Indianapolis Colts Ring of Honor.

So they started a game....which actually isn't true, not every Michigan QB since Grbac has started a game, at least I don't think John Navarre did, he's the only one that comes to mind.
And yes Harbaugh had one or two great seasons, but by and large never lived up to the billing, likes most UM quarterbacks. Bottom line is this, if Terrelle Pryor wants to make it as a QB in the NFL he SHOULDN'T go to Michigan, and more than likely won't. When he said "I won't be visiting Michigan again, I've seen everything I need to see there" I think that says a lot, no way he's headed there.
It'll be Penn State or OSU, and if the kid actually does take an official visit to Penn State, I think he'll end up there. His high school coach also said that if Tom Bradley gets named the next head coach or head coach in waiting, Pryor will sign immediately.

Either way, I couldn't care less about the guy who backs up an NFL QB...seriously, if that's the claim you wanna make, it's pretty weak. Michigan fans seem to think they produce elite NFL quarterbacks and always point to Brady (who pretty much owes his career to Bledsoe and his o-line) who's the only example of a great QB to come out of that school.

OSU have worst fans I have ever seen. Been to 23 different stadiums, not even close. Fights, verbal abuse, etc. It is a shame to for the 80% of fans who are cool, but there is no way around it, buckeye atmosphere the worst!! Miami in late 90's(went to 2 games) next, but NOTHING LIKE COLUMBUS(ND, Michigan, PSU, and Wisconsin)games over last 10 years!!(mich game worst, nd game least bad, but still bad)!

I'm from Texas and went to an OSU game and never experienced any of the stuff people are writing on here. I had a great time and the OSU fans I was sitting by were alot of fun and made me laugh so much!! I had a great time and would go back in a minute!

I think Michigan fans are the most arrogant fans on the planet, with NOTHING to back it up, they're probabaly the most annoying fan base in the country. Their stadium sucks, it's ugly, very hard to get in and out of. Their fans act bored at games, as if they have no passion, constantly getting up to go to the bathroom or for more food, disrupting the view of the game
Bottom line, Michigan is not relevant in the NC race and hasn't been for a decade now. Not even two years ago, they would have been laid to waste by Florida, and this past season, Michigan was probably the biggest dissapointment in college football.

I think Pryor is actually a good kid (from the accounts I read) who would be a STAR at Penn State in the mold of Michael Robinson, but with even more success at both the college and pro levels.

Well, theres in now infamous corvette deal. Given to him by a auto dealer that has dinners with Sweater Vest. And there is the text messages from current OSU players urging him to play for the Buckeyes (a NCAA violation).
There maybe more, I only pay attention 50% of the time.
As far as manufactured? Then Pryor was the one doing the building, both are out of his mouth, not some "anonymous" report.
Look, Pryor is a thug. Doesn't mean he will always be one. I think if he ends up at PSU, a program I have a lot of respect for, they will straighten out his character flaws. Mich too (again, so I don't get huffed at, I don't think hes going to UM). OSU not so much.

PSU will definitely straighten him out, JoePa won't put up with that stuff. To be fair, the text messages came from players who enrolled at OSU early, but technically they aren't on the team yet, so it's not a violation. I think that's pretty lame, but it is within the rules unfortunately.
As far as the corvette thing.....you think the kid would have gotten a nicer vehicle, it's an old corvette, not very nice from the pictures I saw, in any case, do you have a link with a quote from Pryor about that stuff?
I think he ends up at PSU if he listens to the positive influence of his Dad. I think the kid has a good support base with a good family, but he is being swayed by some of the punk recruits OSU has.

I'm a PSU fan/alum. I see all the bashing between big ten schools. This is all too funny and mostly irrelevant...since the big ten cannot compete in National Championships (these days). So, how about we just hope Terrelle does go to a big ten school and maybe bring a championship back to the big ten.

Anonymous, how is your reading comprehension? Jessica told you how she knows what was said after the game. Her brother is on the South Fayette team. That is why she travelled 3 hours to see the game. Is that clear enough for you? And by the way, the whole thing is on FILM and has been reported to the WPIAL. While you can't see exactly what Pryor is saying, you can see each South Fayette player turn back and react after Pryor passes them. He then went directly to the South Fayette student section (where the Superintendent was seated) and threatened to kill them, requiring him to be restrained by his teammates and then the police. These are facts, and most of this was reported in the Washington Observer Reporter. Nice try at defending Pryor's bad behavior. If you were there, you would understand.

I saw Pryor play against my hometown Burrell Bucs and i thought the exact same thing. At the beginning of the game he acted like he didnt want to be there. Then throughout the game he would walk up and down the court and stand under his own basket half of the time while the action was at the other end of the court. Always waiting for a dunk to impress the crowd.

Terrelle Pryor, the coveted quarterback from Jeannette (Pa.) High who is the No. 1 senior prospect in the nation according to rivals.com and scout.com, had a run-in with fans during a prep basketball game Friday.
Pryor, who still hasn't announced where he will play college football, scored 24 points and had 21 rebounds in Jeannette's 64-54 overtime victory over South Fayette.
He also clashed with South Fayette fans who taunted Pryor. One South Fayette student wore a red sweater vest a la Buckeyes football coach Jim Tressel. Two South Fayette students were ejected, according to a story in the Observer-Reporter in Washington, Pa.
"Then, after postgame handshakes, Pryor immediately went toward the student section. Following a ridiculous, prolonged exchange, Pryor's teammates intervened. Why they didn't stop him before is unknown. Why his coaches allowed it to happen is an even greater injustice," the Observer-Reporter's Mike Kovak wrote.

can we all just agree that Pryor is an amazing talent, who is YOUNG. we're all talking so harshly about a 17-18 yr old kid. he has a lot of growing up to do. and yeah, he did say and do a bunch of stuff at that game that was immature and thuggish. Good post. Obviously the kid shouldn't have reacted or acted (depending on which version you believe) in the way that he did....That all being said he is a kid that has a lot of growing up to do. No matter what college he ends up playing for be it PSU, Mich. or tOSU I wish him all the luck. He is an amazing talent, hopefully the coaches where he decides to attend are able to exert a good influence on him and help to turn him into a responsible player and individual.

Terrelle Pryor just fits that stereotype for that type of person, look at the NFL and NBA, they abuse their power cause they are good at a sport for 10 years...I bet he'll get arrested or suspended indefinitely like Perrilloux at LSU. Vince Young was a rare athelete, Terrelle Pryor will never be Vince Young...just another good college player who will abuse his status at the school to get by in life and NOT graduate. He has the chance to go to college for free...he should value his education. I wish him many failures. He reaps what he sows. I graduated from Jeannette high and I have attended many of Pryor's games over several years and I have never seen him dispay any of the behaviors that are described in that article. I'm trying to figure out the motive behind such a bogus story. But everyone has the freedom of speech even if its a pack of lies. Did the writer's brother play for the other team and was it her and her family participating in the shouting of racial slurs to Pryor? Things that make you go, Hmmmm.

Nick, after the WPIAL championship game, Pryor jumped onto the scorer's table and began taunting the Beaver Falls fans. The pattern of behavior here is undeniable. I agree with a bunch of people on here. This article has to be a joke or some kind of envy of Terrelle. I haven't gotten to see him play in person and i don't doubt that some of the article is true but come on. There's no way that an athlete would act that way unless your last name is Artest or Rodman. First off all you see anymore is college students busting on other college students about who's school is better. The talk isn't about Terrelle anymore. Secondly if he really did act that way at the game that you were at, do you honestly think he would even be recruited by any of the big name schools? Yea talent is a huge part of it but also how you carry yourself is another huge part. These big name schools wouldn't even be thinking of Terrelle if he acts that way on the basketball court. Lastly, lets just face it, if the NBA wouldn't have gotten rid of the straight out of high school draft eligiblity then us college students wouldn't even be having these conversations. But Terrelle has to go to College to go pro and in my opinion it'll be a quick trip for him. Get your tickets now cuz it'll be a quick three years at the most for his college career.
