Tiger put himself in position to extend the match to sudden death, but pushed a short birdie putt right, ending his stay in Arizona.
Nick Watney made a par, halving the hole and as a result, will move on to the Round of 16 to take on Lee Westwood.

Tiger narrowly dodged a bullet, as a chip shot that would have won the match for Watney narrowly missed dropping, taking the match to the 18th hole.
Still, he's in a tough spot. Woods now needs to win the 18th hole. A halve will be as good as a win for Watney.

The par-three 16th hole was an ugly one, but that worked well for Tiger. Watney hit his tee shot into the hospitality area next to the green, while Woods made a par in regulation.
Watney's failure to get up-and-down handed Woods the hole, making the final two holes look quite interesting.

Tiger made a clutch birdie on the short par-four 15th hole, getting up and down from in front of the green.
Still, he made no progress on Watney, who had a brilliant up and down from a sidehill lie next to the green.
Watney is now in a position where he can win the match. The next time he wins a hole, Tiger will be sent home and Watney will be on to the Round of 16.

Nick Watney let gave Tiger an opening on the 14th hole, missing a makeable birdie putt, but Woods could not capitalize.
Tiger had a fantastic shot from a fairway bunker, leaving himself a short birdie attempt. Unfortunately, that was pushed right, and Watney escaped with a halve.
Woods' back is now firmly against the wall, as he is two down with four to play. The one advantage he has is that Tiger played all of these holes yesterday, so he does have some experience. Watney's Wednesday match against Darren Clarke ended on the 14th hole.

The winds are picking up and Woods is beginning to leak oil. From the middle of the fairway on the par-five 13th hole, both Woods and Watney walked away with disappointing pars.
The frustrations are far greater for Woods, who need to start making ground up in a hurry. For Watney, a halve is nearly as good as a win, as he is now in control of the match with five holes to go.
Thru 13: Watney 2 up.

Tiger hit his tee shot on the par-three 12th hole into a greenside bunker. He had a fantastic out, nearly holing the shot, saving his par.
Unfortunately, Watney slammed the door with an impressive birdie putt, winning the hole. In winning the hole, Watney now has a little breathing room heading into the stretch of holes where Tiger came back on Wednesday.

Tiger found his form again on the par-five 11th hole, finding the green in two and narrowly missing an eagle putt.
Unfortunately for Woods, Watney's short game came through and he got up-and-down to save a birdie, halving the hole, holding is lead.

Tiger's ball striking is beginning to leak. He had a terrible 10th hole, hanging up an ugly double-bogey, handing Watney the hole.
This match is taking shape similarly to Woods' match yesterday. He is performing well at times, but failing to stay consistent in his all around game.
If Tiger wins the match, he'll have to come from behind again.
Thru 10: Watney 1 up.

Woods failed to capitalize on a strong drive on the par-four ninth, leaving himself a long birdie putt which was missed.
Watney was in close on the hole, but a poor birdie attempt was left short, letting Tiger off of the hook, halving the hole.

Neither man reached the par-five eighth green in two shots, but both were in position to make a birdie.
It started with Watney, who had a poor chip, leaving himself a difficult birdie, which was missed.
After finding a bunker in two, Tiger had a good third, leaving himself a makeable birdie putt, which was missed and the hole was halved with pars.

Tiger didn't play a strong seventh hole, recording his first bogey of the day, missing a short putt for par.
Watney had a tough putt for a par of his own, but converted it, winning the hole and squaring the match.

Neither man was anywhere near the hole on the par-three sixth hole, although both hit the green.
Watney and Tiger both two-putted, although neither was close enough to have his par putt conceded. Watney rolled his par in first, Woods, followed, halving the hole.
Thru 6: Woods 1 up

Woods reversed course on the long par-four fifth hole. His ball striking took a break, badly missing the fairway and subsequently missing the green. Still, and impressive up and down saved a par.
Watney still had a chance to square the match, as his birdie putt was closer than Tiger's par. But when Watney's putt sailed right, Woods got away with his tee-to green struggles, halved the hole, and stayed up in the match.
Thru 5: Woods 1 up.

A dissappointing par-four fourth hole took place for both men. Tiger nearly drove the green, but a poor chip put him out of position to make a birdie. A sliding birdie attempt was missed, but let off the hook.
Watney layed up with an iron, setting up a good distance, but yanked his second shot far from the hole and three-putted for a bogey.
Thru 4: Woods 1 up.

Tiger put his tee shot on the par-three third hole on the green and had a nice two-putt to save his par. Watney was in closer, but still had a substantial birdie putt, which was missed.
Both golfers are striking the ball very well in the early going, as there has been absolutely no scrambling.
Thru 3: All square.

Woods missed an eagle putt on the par-five second hole that would have evened the match, leaving Watney with a birdie putt to halve the hole.
When that putt missed right, the match was all square. Through two holes, Tiger's putter has let him down, but his ball striking appears sharp.
Thru 2: All square.

Woods and Watney had a strong hole, but failure to execute on the green is again putting Tiger in an early hole.
Despite having the shorter of the two putts, Woods missed a birdie after Watney poured a long birdie putt in. Tiger is in the same exact position in the second round that he was in the first, looking up and doing so early.
Thru 1: Watney 1 up.

Woods and Watney are minutes away from stepping to the tee, so it's time to take a run at what's going to happen.
It is a positive that Tiger survived yesterday, but Watney was much better in his match. In a strokeplay event, I would be a lot more enthused, but it's hard to see a long run for Tiger at the matchplay. His game is too inconsistent to survive in this event.
Prediction: Watney 2 & 1.

Tiger Woods and Nick Watney will go off today at 1:37 p.m. EST, 11:37 a.m. local time.
Watney downed Darren Clarke 5 & 4 yesterday, while Woods closed Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño out on the 18th hole for a 1up win.
Looking at their scorecards from yesterday, Watney would have been in great position to win the match over the final four holes had they been playing each other.

Tiger closed out a topsy-turvy day with a clutch up and down from a greenside bunker. Fernández-Castaño had a birdie opportunity that would have extended the match into sudden death, but it missed.
That left Woods with an uphill putt to halve the hole and win the match, which he made. For much of the day, it looked like Tiger would be one-and-done, as he trailed for the majority of the match.
Woods will now move on to face fellow American Nick Watney on Thursday. Watney handily defeated British Open champ Darren Clarke 5 & 4 on Wednesday.
Thru 18: Woods wins 1 up.

Fernández-Castaño made a clutch par from a bad position off of the tee.
Woods still had an opportunity to win the match, but missed a short birdie putt, keeping Fernández-Castaño alive. He did make the comeback putt, staying one hole up.
The two now head to the 18th hole. Woods will win the match if he can manage a halve or better, while Fernández-Castaño needs to win.
Thru 17: Woods 1 up.

The nerves of Fernández-Castaño seem to be showing right now, as he has completely surrendered control of the match.
After Tiger put a tee shot on the green of the par-three 16th hole, Fernández-Castaño badly missed and then failed to get up and down. Woods converted his two-putt to win the hole, going ahead in the match.
Tiger is now in a position where if he wins one more hole, he'll be in the second round.
Thru 16: Woods 1 up.

The driveable par-five 15th hole provided plenty of action for both golfers, as Fernández-Castaño and Woods each hit strong drives.
Fernández-Castaño missed the green right but a solid chip gave him a tough yet makeable birdie. Woods drove the green, but missed his eagle putt, giving Fernández-Castaño a chance to halve the hole.
Fernández-Castaño's putt narrowly missed his birdie putt, effectively making the match a best-of-three.
Thru 15: All Square.
Christian Petersen/Getty Images
Tiger had a brilliant up and down on the par-four 14th after short-siding himself over the green. Unfortunately for him, Fernández-Castaño played the hole in regulation, also making a par.
Four holes now remain in this match and while it's still close, Tiger's back is firmly against the wall. Fernández-Castaño is not making mistakes, so Tiger will need to make some birdies.
Thru 14: Fernández-Castaño 1 up
