Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has promised the club will do everything it can to help Paul Gascoigne.
The former England midfielder was arrested by Northumbria police and sectioned under the Mental Health Act Thursday after altercations at two Newcastle hotels.
Gascoigne was a youth team member and Keegans's bootboy when Keegan played for the Magpies in the 1983/1984 season.
"He was my boot-boy when I was a player...and not a very good one. He lost my boots—well, one of them anyway—when I was scoring quite a lot of goals," Keegan said.
Gascoigne captained the Newcastle youth team in the 1984/85 FA Youth Cup win, and in his first season with the senior team the following year, scored nine goals.
Named as Barclays Young Player of the Year in 1988, Gascoigne was courted by Manchester United, but signed with Tottenham Hotspur for a then-British transfer record 2.3 million pounds.
Gascoigne made 125 appearances for Newcastle scoring 25 goals.
Keegan believes that although this episode was unfortunate, it might be a turning point for Gascoigne if he can reach out and receive the right care.
Keegan stressed he would like to keep matters as private as possible—although a future position with the Magpies might be on the cards if Gascoigne can pull through.
