Atlanta Falcons' Job Opening for Left Tackle: Apply Within

Frank SpartiJun 7, 2018

The Atlanta Falcons' biggest need is arguably at left tackle,ย where Will Svitek had to save the day when Sam Baker failed miserably in protecting Matt Ryan and in run support.

The entire game changes radically when a quarterback is always running for his life. Nothing is slow in the NFL, but an extra second or two can make a huge difference.

Matt Ryan can process information as well as any quarterback in the game. He can make quick decisions, and it is hard to rattle him.

However, Ryan was hit and harassed so much that he lost his poise more times in 2011 than in any other season. He still did an amazing job of avoiding mistakes considering the circumstances.

The difference between a win and a loss is often just a few plays. The question arises, what is the best move the Atlanta Falcons can make in order to secure the left tackle position?

D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Constitution seems to think acquiring Marcus McNeill from the San Diego Chargers is a viable option.

It is thought that McNeill can pass a physical for the Falcons but not the Chargers.

I must say that several players have joined the Falcons organization and in so doing were given rehabilitation and strength training that was better and more effective than at other teams' facilities.

It just goes to show that every edge can make a difference in football.

The question I have to ask is, how can Marcus McNeill be the answer when Sam Baker is dismissed and written off so easily?

I think the Falcons can perform miracles on Sam Baker and have the best answer to their problem. His experience aids continuity.

Bring in McNeill on an incentive-based contract if you want, but don't let Baker slip away just yet.

For some reason, it is human nature that people think the grass is greener on the other side. I think it just looks greener and it's only turf anyway.

The Atlanta Falcons should look within to solve this issue. If they don't, then maybe they know something about Baker that we don't.
