According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia cornerback Sanders Commings has been suspended for the first two games of the 2012 season by head coach Mark Richt.

Commings was arrested by UGA Police last month on a charge of domestic violence. He allegedly struck his girlfriend during a late-night argument in downtown Athens, police said at the time.

Commings is projected as a starting cornerback and his absence will be felt early in the season. The Bulldogs shouldn’t feel the loss of Commings against Buffalo in Week 1, but the second game of the season should be interesting. Georgia will face a Missouri team that likes to sling the ball around a bit and returns veterans T.J. Moe and Marcus Lucas.

Plus, incoming freshman Dorial Green-Beckham will probably add something to that passing game that will likely cause fits for the Georgia secondary.

Other cornerbacks in the news at Georgia were Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders, who were dismissed from the Georgia’s football program Feb. 3. Both plan on continuing their football careers, and perhaps their paths may lead them back to Georgia.

“Nick Marshall enrolled at Garden City (Kan.) Community College and Chris Sanders at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville,” Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The high school coaches of both players indicated they will have an opportunity to return to the Bulldogs.

“I haven’t had any conversations with Georgia, but it’s my understanding [returning] is a possibility,” Marshall’s high school coach told Towers. “I’m not sure if it’s anything definite, but he has expressed interest in doing that.”

Franklin Stephens, Sanders’ high school coach, added, “My understanding is he should have an opportunity to come back to UGA. I thought it was great that coach Richt was going to have open-door policy about the possibility of returning.”

The loss of Nick Marshall and Chris Sanders, along with Commings' two-game suspension, will test Georgia’s depth in the secondary early.

Branden Smith will be UGA’s starting bookend at cornerback. Damien Swann, a sophomore this fall, should be the first in line to replace Commings.
