UFC on Fuel: What We Learned from Stipe Miocic vs Phil De Fries
In a rare battle between undefeated heavyweights, Stipe Miocic finished off British prospect Phil De Fries quickly, winning the fight by first round knockout.
Both guys came out swinging and it was only a matter of time before one hit the floor.
De Fries landed a decent combination, but got caught on the way out by a big straight right from Miocic.
He backed away and was obviously stunned. Miocic pounced, throwing one right hand after the other, until one of them finally connected.
De Fries dropped, and a few punches from Miocic later, the fight was stopped.
What We Learned About Stipe Miocic
We knew Miocic had power, but that was impressive.
Billed as a finisher prior to his UFC debut, he finally got to showcase that ability tonight.
After dominating Joey Beltran in his last fight, Miocic had a lot of hype and he delivered with this performance.
What We Learned About Phil De Fries
There wasn’t much to judge De Fries by in this one. He may have been better off going to the takedown and using his jujitsu, but it never really got that far.
It will be interesting to see how De Fries deals with is first career loss going into his next bout.
What’s Next for Miocic?
As there is never an influx of good, young, heavyweight talent, expect the UFC to continue to bring Miocic up slowly.
A bout with Mike Russow, who’s currently riding a win streak of his own, would propel the winner into the top half of the division and move them closer to title contention.
What’s Next for De Fries?
It’s still early in his UFC career, so there is plenty of time for him to come back from this loss.
If Christian Morecraft is still holding on to his roster spot, a bout between those two could be fun to watch.
