The Associated Press is reporting that "three sources close to the NFL, New Jersey politics and sports in northern New Jersey" told them today that WrestleMania 29 will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will host a press conference tomorrow to make the official announcement.
Right across the Hudson River from Manhattan, the two-year-old outdoor stadium is the home of the New York Jets and Super Bowl champion New York Giants. It's located in the same Meadowlands Sports Complex as the Izod Center (colloquially known as the Meadowlands Arena), which has hosted WWE events for decades.
Some reports have implied that Fan Axxess will take place at the Izod Center and it wouldn't be a shock to see the Hall of Fame take place there as well. On the other hand, in the new Wrestling Observer Newsletter that was published for subscribers just before reports went up, Dave Meltzer reported that the plan was to hold Axxess somewhere in Manhattan.
This had been rumored for several weeks, but always seemed somewhat unrealistic. Outdoor WrestleManias have traditionally been held in cities with warm climates: Las Vegas in 1993, Orlando four years ago and Miami six weeks from now.
This also makes the site of WrestleMania 30 in 2014 more of a question mark.
The inaugural WrestleMania—WrestleMania 10—and WrestleMania 20 all took place at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. so it seemed natural that WrestleMania 30 would take place there, albeit with raised ticket prices to make up for taking place in a basketball/hockey arena. With the show in the New York market next year instead, it seems a lot less likely.
It will be interesting to see how WWE deals with weather-related contingency plans, as well as how the now traditional non-WWE events from Ring of Honor, Dragon Gate USA, WrestleReunion and maybe some others play out.
