NFL, NFC North, Green Bay Packers, Brett Favre

For the last six seasons, Green Bay Packers fans have been subjected to the role of audience in the annual "Will He or Won't He?" Sweepstakes Lottery.

It's sort of like watching Jeopardy, and thinking you know the answer, then finding out you were totally wrong.

On the one hand, it's not the end of the world because you didn't actually lose any money, but at the same time it's frustrating because there's nothing you can do about being wrong.

It's a tough position to be in, especially when the “prize” in question is arguably the best quarterback in NFL history.

Since 2002, Packers quarterback Brett Favre has been toying with the idea of retirement, and has yet to make a decision. He will hopefully do so before the February 29 free agency date, so that the Packers won't end up in the bottom of the league again.

Favre is also trying to reconcile his age with his ability. He's trying to make sure that his decision is best for himself, his family, and his team. He's trying to decide whether or not he's willing to make the commitment to train for another off-season to come back. He's also trying to decide it this season really was his high point, and whether it would be a good time to call it quits.

Brett Favre is my favorite quarterback of all time; he's one of my favorite athletes of all time. He's also one of the classiest athletes I've ever heard about (as long as one can ignore his substance abuse in the past).

He's the consummate sportsman, and he made it a joy to be a Packers fan this year.

More than all of that, watching Favre play football reminds me how awesome it is to get to do something that you love.

Whether or not he decides to retire, I hope he knows that his fans and admirers are from way outside of Green Bay, and Wisconsin for that matter.

Most of all, I wish that he'd hurry the hell up so I can stop checking Google News on an hourly basis.

  1. Good article. Hopefully he sticks around another year, if only to bring a new QB along. If he retires, then unfortunately the Pack will be near the bottom again because they just don't have a replacement for him.

    1. Aaron Rodgers? The 1st round pick of 2005 that has been learning behind Brett Favre for the last 3 years. Aaron Rodgers is an impressive prospect that could have been the 1st overall pick of the 2005 draft. Like the author said, this is an annual thing. Do you think the Packers are foolish enough to have not considered a replacement for Favre? His offseason status has been undecided for the last 2-3 years.

    2. Sorry Chris. I don't think the Packers have really thought about life after Brett. Rodgers is not the QB of the future. He hasn't shown anything in the few moments he has played to show that he is the next guy. The Packers will continue to rely on Brett and when he does retire they will blame him for taking so long.

    3. I think you're misinformed. Mike McCarthy is on record saying Rodgers is the QB of the future for Green Bay. He was a 1st round pick when the Packers didn't really need a QB. They were looking for a franchise QB of the future. He came in against Dallas and outperformed Favre in that game. Coming in cold off the bench with that much pressure and nearly leading the Packers to a win certainly proves that he definitely has potential. Favre was getting killed in that game. Rodgers comes in to the game behind by 17 and leads the Packers to within 3. Rodgers was thought of as the potential 1st overall pick of the 2005 draft. The 49ers however made a huge mistake picking Alex Smith instead of Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers is certainly an amazing prospect.

  2. The Packers spent a 1st round draft pick on a quarterback and you think they're not preparing for life after Favre? In his first few years in the league, Rodgers didn't look like he was capable of taking over the reigns but after the last two preseasons and the Dallas game Rodgers has looked like a capable starting quarterback for the Packers. The only thing that would seem like a problem for Rodgers would be injuries in his limited action. I do want Favre back, he provides the best chance for the Packers to suceed next year. One more year.

  3. Rogers may be the future of GB DOWN the line. He is NOT their best chance to get to the playoffs again next season - Favre is. Besides, aside from the Dallas game, I'm not impressed with Rogers. He gets hurt too often. When will people realize this. The "future" of any football organization doesn't guarantee and SB appearance. What? You don't want your team to go to the SB next year?? The future is next season PERIOD. With Favre.

    1. What do you mean he gets hurt too often? Aside from the hamstring injury in practice after the Dallas game where has Rodgers shown an injury tendency? The injury against NE the year before was a freak accident. He broke his foot. It could happen to any QB. A broken foot is a hard thing to play with.

  4. Rodgers isn't all bad. Unfortunately it's really hard to say if he's ready, because he's had virtually NO chance to get into a game.

  5. Alge Crupler and the packers. The packers coud use a guy like him.But Donald Lee is an outstanding TE.

  6. Brett Favre: I want your babies!!!

  7. Hit the nail on the HEAD!!!

  8. He will come back for another year. He's had much harder seasons to decided about- when the team didn't show nearly as much potential - but this year he will have fun playing. He said he would stop when it wasn't fun. Give me a reason why this season wouldn't be fun.

  9. if favre dosn't come back, i don't know what i'll do

  10. if favre dosn't come back, i don't know what i'll do

  11. WILL GET DEREK ANDERSEN

  12. i think aaron rodgers is a mature young QB, he showed alot against dallas. and anyone to play behind Brett Favre for 3 seasons has learned alot and gained skill. i think if Favre decides to go, aaron rodgers will step up and do alot.

  13. Im a huge fan of brett favre. But he may retire because he has to commit everyting he has for another year then this starts all over again. Some people think he won't because of his great year. But don't be surprise.

  14. It's time....you're only as good as your last pass - and we know how that went....
