MLB, NL East, New York Mets, Orlando Hernandez

Multiple sources, including David Lennon of Newsday, reported that New York Mets pitcher, Orlando Hernandez, has not faced any batters this spring due to some foot issues.

Met fans had been under the impression that El Duque had surgery this off-season to remove a bunion, when in fact it was to remedy a dislocated toe.  The toe is now shorter and affecting Hernandez's balance and mechanics.

  • B/R Ticket Guide

The bunion is still there and still painful.

For now the plan is for El Duque to face batters on Saturday.

Johan Santana faced batters for the first time today in batting practice.

There have also been reports that Hernandez is planning to retire at the end of this season, but it might come sooner.

Additionally, the reports that the Mets are not interested in injured right-hander Freddy Garcia may have to be rescinded with this latest news about El Duque.

Of course, Kyle Lohse is still out there! (Don't all hop up at once.)

To paraphrase WFAN's Steve Somers: “Shea is the only Major League Stadium to provide wheelchair access to the pitching staff.”
