According to major league sources, the Red Sox never made a foral offer to outfielder Yoenis Cespedes before the free agent signed a four-year, $36 million deal with the Athletics.

The team did remain in talks with the 26-year-old's representatives throughout his free agency, and Cespedes was brought into the team's academy in the Dominican Republic for a workout in front of team officials in November, but the Sox were only interested in a deal that would have been at a lower average annual value than what materialized; as such, there was never an apparent fit between the Sox and the highly regarded talent from Cuba.
