Denver Broncos: Possible Quarterback Additions Through Free Agency and the Draft

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

The Denver Broncos have made it very clear that Tim Tebow will enter training camp next season as the team's starting quarterback, but behind him is a jumbled mess of uncertainty.ย

Former starter Kyle Orton was released in the middle of last season and later signed by the Kansas City Chiefs. Backup Brady Quinn is a free agent and will likely move on to another team in hopes of starting someday, and second-year quarterback Adam Weber most likely isn't ready to be a backup, especially with how often Tebow runs and absorbs hits.

The situation will likely mean the Broncos take a serious look into both free agency and the draft, in hopes of acquiring one or more quarterbacks to complete the depth chart.

It's also possible that Denver brings in both a veteran free agent and a rookie prospect to compete with Tebow.

Let's take a very brief look into free agency at quarterback:

Vince Young, Eagles

If Tebow is the starter, it's possible that Denver targets a similar player as a backup.

Young isn't a perfect fit, but he can make plays with his legs and could run most of the same plays Tebow does in the Broncos offense.

Josh Johnson, Buccaneers

Same premise here. Johnson is still young at just 25 years old, too.ย

Dennis Dixon, Steelers

Not to sound like a broken record, but Dixon also fits the profile.

Drew Stanton, Lions

Stanton has been a capable backup for the Lions in the past, and he has some athletic ability.

While he is not a perfect offensive fit, he is still someone to consider if the Broncos want a more traditional thrower.

Here's a quick look at some athletic quarterbacks in the draft:

Russell Wilson, Wisconsin

He can make plays with his feet and actually throws with accuracy. Wilson was more of a traditional offense quarterback, however.

Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

The Broncos would have to spend a higher pick on Tannehill, but there's some serious potential here.ย

Brock Osweiler, Arizona State

At 6'8", you wouldn't expect Osweiler to have the mobility he does.ย

Domnique Davis, East Carolina

Davis fits more of the run-first, pass-later quarterback profile that Tebow is in Denver.

Chandler Harnish, Northern Illinois

Harnish is likely the closest draftable prospect there is in this class to Tebow.

Of course, these names are put together with the likelihood that the Broncos want to continue to move forward with an offense designed around the talents of Tebow.

It's possible that Denver wants to go in a completely different direction however, and this offseason could be the first indicator of that. ย
