Patriots Draft: New England Makes Magic with Randy Moss
Currently UnEdited
This article has not been edited yet.
In the NFL draft, some teams set themselves up for the future; other teams look for the missing piece to win now.
Then there are the Patriots.
They draft for tomorrow, they wheel and deal for today...and they make it all look easy.
OK, that second part didn't actually happen. In theory, yes; in reality, no.
Moss has the potential to make the Patriots offense one of the most powerful in football—assuming New England gets touchdown-scoring, deep-ball-catching, freak-of-nature Moss rather than bench-pouting, route-quitting, team-killing Moss.
The Patriots now have the weapon they've desperately needed for years. Tom Brady loves to throw the deep ball, but has struggled to find a go-to guy. Deion Branch fit that role for a couple of seasons, but most of the deep balls Branch caught were skinny posts or double moves. Moss will be able to get off the line of scrimmage, beat a corner with ease, and outjump anyone when the ball is near him.
Skeptics might point out that Moss hasn't been the same since he left Minnesota—that he's 30 years old and slowing down. Even so, he's still an upgrade over any receiver on the Patriots' roster, and there's no telling what a change of scenery will do. Moss' character, which has been an issue in the past, shouldn't be a problem in New England...so long as Bill Belichick gives him some of that Corey Dillon Kool-Aid.
Bottom line: New England got an elite receiver for an offense that badly needed one. They could have done no better with their fourth-round pick this year, which already makes the trade worth every penny.
The Patriots had real draft picks too, and they added some key players that will provide much-needed depth.
The Pats' success on the field can be attributed to many things, and one of those would be a focus on the offensive and defensive lines. On the second day of the draft, New England picked four linemen (three on offense, one on defense) who should make an impact.
With a spotty history of health along the O-line, the Pats made a good move to get depth by drafting two tackles (Clint Oldenburg and Corey Hilliard) and a guard (Mike Elgin), all of whom should be able to fill in as needed and push the starters for playing time.
Going into the draft, New England needed to find safety and linebacker help. In the first round, they picked Brandon Meriweather, a safety and brawl-starter out of Miami.
The hope is that Meriweather will eventually replace Rodney Harrison as the starting strong safety. When Harrison has gone down with injuries in each of the last two seasons, the defense has suffered greatly—so the investment in Meriweather was a good move.
In the fourth round, the Patriots drafted defensive lineman Kareem Brown, also out of the U. In going back to the Miami well, the Pats might have been looking for help should the Chargers seek some midfield logo revenge when the two teams meet again this year.
Two linebacker picks in the sixth and seventh rounds may pan out to be good moves as well. Justin Rogers (SMU) and Oscar Lua (USC) were both defensive stalwarts on their respective college teams, and will hopefully challenge for starting spots.
Riding the momentum of an already prosperous offseason, the Patriots proved again in the 2007 NFL Draft that they have one of the best personnel departments in the league. With their newest additions in place, another date with the commissioner and the Lombardi Trophy might not be far off.

This team just keeps hanging around for hte reasons you outline above. They make great moves and somehow manage to focus on both the present and future concurrently. Do you think they made any moves that specifically impact how they match up against Colts or Chargers?

Taking a first rounder from Miami, then picking up Randy Moss the next day? Maybe it's just me, but the Patriots leadership must be fully confident in BB's ability to reform bad attitudes. I personally have a lot of respect for this organization's ability to make gentlemen out of felons, but they have really bitten off more than they can chew here. Good luck!

"The biggest news of the second day of the draft was New England acquiring Randy Moss for a fourth-round choice. The deal forced NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to concede the season to the Pats and hand them the Lombardi Trophy on the spot."
I know this is supposed to be a joke, but it's pretty much true, right? Brady finally has recievers to throw too, something I've been waiting to see for a long time.
What will be the result? For my money, it's an MVP caliber season from Brady and a 4th Super Bowl championship.
This is, of course, assuming that Randy Moss will get his act together we know what a punk he can be. But I'm guessing he'll realize early on that his attitude isn't going to be tolerated in New England, and bite his tongue because he wants to win and he knows that's what the Patriots do.

Both teams that Randy Moss was expecting a trade from (New England and Greenbay) both reported Randy ran in between a 4.29 or 4.30 40 yard dash times. Randy never was slowing down. He just gave up on the Raiders franchise. I respect Randy for his insane stats. New England has the leadership to keep Randy in line. AND his contract has zero-tolerance policy. So if he acts once, hes gone. Im a Chiefs fan at heart but I love Randy Moss and the way he plays. Hes never had a QB like Tom Brady. So im waiting to see how well he does. I want Randy to get another 1,000 yard season. Good luck to New england

I really want to be a cynic here, but let's face it: Tom Brady + motivated Randy Moss = awesome.
Other than BradyMania, the Moss trade was the story of the draft for me. A 4th rounder? Are you kidding me?
I also found it interesting that the Browns jumped a couple of spots in front of the Pats to get Quinn - otherwise I think it's possible we could have had Brady apprenticing under Brady.

The reference to Corey Dillon Kool Aid is right on in more ways than one. This trade has the potential to vault the Pats to a new level just like the Dillon trade did back in 2004. That trade gave the Pats their first real running back of the Brady era. This gives them their first go-to receiver. Expect another Super Bowl (or two) asap.
Lets face it, Brady + Moss = Success. But can the Patriots change the Randy Moss that played for the Raiders!? Yea, he is awesome, but once he got to the Raiders he disappeared as a receiver! But i think it was a good decision. Brady needs a reliable receiver to catch those deep passes he likes to throw, and who better than RANDY MOSS?
The patriots realise this is a gamble. We also have for recievers Wes Welker, Dante Stallworth, Chad Jackson, Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell, and the AARP Member Troy Brown.
Even if Moss doesn't work out the Pats are still fine.
If he does work out.......Expect Massive numbers. Possibly record breaking numbers.
Tom Brady in my opinion is one of the best quaterbacks to ever play the game and when he got Dante from the saints orginization i knew they had a very talented deep as well as fast reciever. Now they have Randy Moss who is one of the best recievers in the NFL. When you get great players like this on the same team great things will happenm shutouts in the playoffs. releasing this team on any other just isn't fair. I also think that Randy's numbers will sky rocket after this. You can't really blame him for qiving up on the raiders. They're a losing franchise and need a major overhaul before they'll reach the superbowl. This is a dream come true for patriot fans and i am so happy even though i am a saints fan at heart i still hope that the patriots return to the superbowl once again. All I know is that I feel sorry for the defensive coaches that have to play this outstanding and very well coached team.

brady and moss watch out moss now has a qb money is not his focus now its bling on his finger something oakland could never show him

belichick has always been able to get the most talent out of his players, which makes these offseason acquisitions all the more dangerous. while I may be a patriots fan, the road is not nearly as clearcut as people think. Indy added gonzalez to replace stokely, which could rekindle memories of manning's 2004 record season. If gonzalez can digest and assimilate the indy offense, then records just might fall. the same could be said about moss, stallworth, and welker(a VERY good slot receiver). in fact, it could turn into a horse race between the offenses for the record. In the same breath, San Diego is still incredibly talented with Denver and Baltimore being contenders as well. This is far from over, but I sure am incredibly optimistic...

tom brady and randy moss are badass. peyton manning and marvvin harrison arent going to stand a chance against these guys, and tom brady is the best quarterback inthe league.

Randy Moss might smoke a lot of pot but that isnt gonna stop him and tom brady from beatin some ass this year!!
i have no worries about moss acting out, he is a veteran who understands that he needs to get it in gear if he wants to win a superbowl. moss may not post career bests, but i look for tom brady to post huge numbers with his amped receiving corps.
meriweather will be molded, but he is still raw. fortunately he comes in under a player with passion like his. rodney harrison will make sure that he uses his passion the right way on the field.

After the AFC Championship game, I thought the aura of the Pats had gone for good. So what do they do? Address every single position with a Pro Bowl LB, Pro Bowl WR's in Moss and Stallworth, a WR/KR to replace Brow, which they hadn't done for about 3 or 4 years, replace Harrison with another mean badass safety and picked up some excellent future prospect OL and LB paleysr in the draft. And two 1st round pciks next year!
WOW! This could be the second coming of this franchise and I wouldn't be surprised if they want to win another 3 SB's. BB will be regarded - if he isn't already - as the best coach ever if this were to happen. Who really remembers Cleveland now?

I feel that they will do well.

Adding the recievers they did not only helps there passig game but will keep the defense off the line and open it up for Maroney. Monster offensive season for everyone on the Pats.

I was jacked when the pats traded for Randy Moss. I dont think there are going to be many teams if any that can handle covering Moss, Stallworth, Welker, and who ever the pats decide to put on the field with them. As far as BB and Moss's attitude goes I seem to remeber a reciever with talent that was on the team when BB took over. I belive his name was Terry Glenn. Glenn gave BB a hard time half way through the year and what did BB do? Cleared out his locker and set his a#$ packing without hesitation. I think BB will so the same if Moss acts up and Moss knows it. Plus who take aa 16 million pay cut to get tossed off a superbowl team!

As I recall the last minute nail-biting AFC loss to the Colts came in an overheated dome, one week after the win over the Chargers. The Colts were coming off a 2-week rest, playing in their own stadium, while the Patriots were still exhausted from a championship calibre road game. Given these conditions, it was like the Patriots were on 4-cylinders while the Colts were on 8. To me this says, at the end, the Patriots were already a better team.
Given the substantial off-season improvements, things really look good. - better. But from a practical standpoint, the results of last year should teach us that the Patriots still need to win home field advantage (and some time off) to prevent premature burnout. Or, for the sake of fairness, the league should prevent title games from being played with unequal conditions.

I love the moves they made this year. I so look forward to the season, I already can't wait. But be realistic here, SB? We have to play the games, you never know,as any New Englang fan knows (Red Sox)anything can happen. So lets not get too cocky and enjoy the season.

This offseason has been absolutely unbelieveable for the Pats! A couple other teams have improved themselves, but the Pats have made themselves Superbowl bound. Last year, the Colts luckly got past them, but this year, after losing some of the defense, they will have no shot against the Pats! None of the contenders will be able to combat the arsenal that Brady has now defensively. Hopefully the Pats can hold up defensively themselves and not go through the injury situations they've had the last couple of years...without those injuries, the Pats might have been going for a 4-peat this year. In either case, the Pats got a real good shot this year at winning the Superbowl...anything less would be a disappointment...especially after all the accumulated talent! I just hope they don't turn into the USA Olympic Basketball team...great talent, but no cohesion as a team. After all...this is a team sport, and if they can bring it together...like only Belichek could do, they will be unbeatable!

This is simple really. Randy Moss is like the majority of people out there, he just happens to be a celebrity. The Raiders are the worst team in the NFL, from the coaching staff to the players. Randy was in a bad situatio nthat was only getting worse and worse so of course he gave up. Wouldn't you give up on a dead end job? Then he gets the opportunity to work for a NFL juggernaut, the Microsoft of the NFL if you will, so he takes it. The only thing similar between the Pats and the Raiders is that they are both NFL teams. The Pats have a first class organization from top to bottom and he will thrive there because of it. He will be treated well and he will be around players that crave winning. Randy Moss will be a new man in New England and he will be better than he ever has been. You can count on that.

The move is unbelievable! I was so happy when I seen the trade for moss. I couldn't stop thinking about how electrifying our passing game will be. We have Kelly Washington who the bengals gave up on, Wes wilker the best slot reciever in the game, And my man Donte stallworth. You have to be over-excited as a pats fan!! Randy is a great player that was on a losing team. That would frustrate Tom brady if he was on say Houston or detroit. Randy is still one of the best recievers in the game and has not lost a step. Moss will be rejuvenated under Tom brady and you better believe we should have the 1st or 2nd ranked offense!! San diego who??

A bit of a dream come true-Moss Stallworth Watson Welker and Jackson for added juice? Brady pitching... Oh yeah.
One small note-Paper tiger right now. New unbeaten streak? New team with no losses in the L column? Possible. Another Lombardi Trophy or two. All within the realm of possiblity, but to echo a previous entry, we haven't even had a mini camp yet, and no one is on the field in front of a gameday crowd, so let's just enjoy, daydream a little and start looking for reports from Foxboro.

I have been a pats fan since i was a rug rat. I think the character focus is great... these fellas get a lot of air time, and punks well its just bad. However, there are reasons these overpaid ding dongs act the way they do. THat being said, be he moss or the rookie... give them a chance to do it right... stop trying to nit pick and let them prove they arent jerks.... and that they want the hardware. It is football, not OPrah. get the human interest out of football, unless they act like pacman or the other dillholes that make the world look bad.

Finally this team gets some weapons. I do wish they would pull in a few more linebackers. That colts game came down to a minute... if they had run the ball instead of 4 passes manning would have had about 30 secs to do something. It is quite apparent that it stung to have a game in hand and blow it. Coach B basically admits he had some bad playcalls and is rewarding Bradys patience with some playmakers.
lets get it done.
Moss was very excited to play for the Pats, and winning changes everything. It is hard to keep giving it your all when the rest of your team is so bad. You watch what he does playing for the best team in the league, with the best quarterback in the league. The rest of the league better watch out for Moss and the Pats this year, after the loss to the Colts last year this whole organization wants to win very badly!!!!!!!! GO PATS!!

Down here in 'phin zone it's really good to know there's no way that anyone can touch the Pats this year............roll PATS!
i dont even know where to begin being a patriots fan and alot went wrong in that championship game the bad pass interferance call on hobbs, the defense being wore out, having to put it all on bradys back to win the game with 2 class recievers who actually played pretty good except for the game that counted the most, patriots fans being banned for the second week in a row, and the heat problem that the colts turned up and worked in practice in so the patriots go out and get the best in free agency and then get moss who i think will behave well cause what good player actually takes that much of a cut that says he wants to win and who better then brady and billichick and also not to mention thomas, stallworth, james, welker, washington and i could go on but considering from reports their still not done and are targeting a few other key player and plus they get merriweather in the draft and if it ever happened i wish that harrison could stay healthy then have merriweather line up next to him and work out a deal with samuel and then have hobbs on the other side thats crazy and unstoppable plus all the vetren linbackers bheind the best defense line in the game i cant wait until this season the patriots would have won the 2005 and 2006 superbowls if they would have stayed healthy the only thing the colts have done to help themselves this year was get rid of all of their key defense players so yeah give us one of the most hardest schdeuls in the league and see what we cant do with our new dominate team and weapons
about 1 year ago
Lets just hope that the loss of a veteren dependable running back, leaving the running game most solely in the capable hands of Maroney and a return of form from Faulk arent derailed by any injuries. Sammy Morris is what he is much like Caldwell and Gaffney last year, can make a play or two but just as likely to miss one or two. If the running game is ineffective we may have to stitch Brady's arm back together by mid-season! BOY does he have some weapons. Most rosters maybe go 3-4 real playmakers deep, total. 3 potential #1's for other teams make up our first three recievers, Jackson gets benefit of doubt being a first rdr. then throw in Welker plus TE Watson and it just starts getting scary!! YES. GO PATS!!!!!!!!!
First off, lets not count our eggs as chickens before they are even born. I am as excited as anyone about the potential of the Pats this year, but a few key injuries could easily derail what has the potential to be a record setting season. I do not believe Moss will be an issue at all, he knows that if he wants a ring and entry into the Hall of Fame, this is going to be his chance. I do not doubt him at all when he says we will see things from him that we have not seen in his precious 9 years in the league. Here's to a healthy, record breaking, Super Bowl season. GO PATS!!!!!!

that should be previous, not precious!!!

With the additions the Patriots have made this year it will be extremely hard for the NFL to 'rig' another game against the Patriots. They apologized a week after the Championship game for their 'misquews', thus taking away another SB appearance. That doesn't cut it in my book.
The same thing happened the year before against Pittsburgh. Luckily Ben R made a game saving tackle. Let that nose picking Peyton Manning earn his invites to the SB the old fashioned way. By winning without 'flagrant bad officiating'. it makes one think the NFL is trying to favor the Colts for marketing purposes.
There can be no doubt that the Pats are considered a bonified potential Super Bowl bound team. They have been for years now, but forsee the next couple seasons being something very special...an offensive AFC monster devouring the competition!!! We are all about to witness an air show unseen since Marino and the Marx brothers. Look for Brady to throw 45+ td passes along with 5000+ yds. Oh yeah! How could I forget...another Lombardi trophy.
I'm a Pats fan. I'm already sick and tired of Randy Moss being on the team. When people talk about the Patriots, they should talk about the Patriots--you know, the team that ran out onto the field in the Super Bowl as a TEAM instead of individuals.
The sooner we can all stop talking about Moss and get back to football, the better. Plus, I'd like to see how Moss handles just being another cog in the wheel instead of the wheel itself.
I don't mean smokin the funny stuff either.I am very excited about the acquisition of Randy Moss(along with the other new players).I think Moss knows this is a second chance, a resurrection if you will. Very good things can come out of this for the Patriots(another Superbowl),and for Moss, to show people that he is a good person, and an even better football player than anybody ever imagined.
I say we give Randy Moss a break, accept him for who he is, and let him showcase his talents in New England. I feel that if wwe embrace him with open arms and earn his trust, we will see his unmatched talents come through. If this turns out like I feel it will, I think we are talking about a Jerry Rice/Joe Montana type of passing tandem. It is going to be unstoppable!

I am a Patriots fan from way back. A Connecticut native. I have moved around the country a lot and no matter where I live I wear my Pats colors.
Living in Michigan now and I still wear my colors.
I have been to Gillette and seen Brady chuckin the ball against the Packers on a cold rainy loosing day, but it was still the time of my life.
I saw Pink Floyd play at the old stadium in Foxboro in 95. I thought I could die a happy man that night.
Now I'm gonna say something.
Give me two tickets to Gillette for my wife and I on a sunny, cool, autumn day just so we can watch Brady drop back, throw deep down the sidelines and have Moss catch the pigskin and turn on the afterburners and blaze to the end zone.
That might beat the Floyd concert!
The Pats definitely had a season altering draft with the acquisition of Moss for a 4th round pick. Some people have been a little hard on him, remember New England is an opportunity for Randy to have a fresh start. Let's give him the opportunity to prove he wants a SB ring. Jabbar Gaffney should be given a break too, he only spent the end of the season with the Pats. He started to show some promise. Lets see what he can do when allowed a full season. Defensively Adalius Thomas was huge addition, but more work is needed there. Teddy Brushci deserves some help inside!
Now the big questions....
Will Eugene Wilson repeat his rookie performance?
Will Asante Samuel come to his senses or listen to his agent? (Nate Clement wasn't worth the money, nor is anyone else)
Will the officiating improve this year? (The playoffs were a travesty! Both NFC and AFC)

The media measures public figures to God like standards, crucifying the individual with the slightiest infraction whether real or imagined for self gain (to fabricate a juicy story). There is no human past, present or in the future that can meet such unreal expectation. As a long time fan of the Pats, I extent my hand with a firm shake to Mr. Moss. Look him in the eyes with the respect that every person deserves and say "Welcome". Welcome to New England. Treat Randy with respect, don't place your or the media's expectation on him. Allow him the right to be himself and the room to prove himself to the team and the fans of New England. Encourage and like anything of this planet it will blossom into something great and wondrous. Should he stumble allow him the benefit of the doubt that you would like to receive.

Even without Moss, the Pat's are strong, so they have nothing to lose in bringing him in. Personally, being in Oakland and a Pat's fan, Randy is getting some bad press. Moss tried to rally the raiders but so much within the organization went sour, the whole team soured. He will shine in NE.

The offense might be the best the nfl has ever seen moss and donte on the outside wes and watson working the middle are going to keep everyone out of the box and maroney is going to run wild and not to mention brady. the defense will be solid just like they were last year records broken super bowl won and the season hasnt even started

Canton, Ohio - 2018:
First Ballot Inductions to the Hall of Fame -
Tom Brady, New England Patriots Quarterback. Resume? 6 Superbowls wins, 4 Superbowl MVPs, 2 League MVPs, Winningest quarterback ever.
Randy Moss, New England Patriots Wide Out.
Resume? 3 Superbowl wins, 1 Superbowl MVP, 2nd most recieving yards in history.
Good God, what have the Pats done? We are unstoppable now! Thank you B.B., Kraft's...this is going to be the best team EVER!

The Pats almost did it in '06. They've improved immensely. Randy Moss for a 4th round draft pick? If he were a college senior he would have gone in the top 5. The draft was weak after the first 15 or so picks. Trading rof 49ers 1st round pick next year was great. 49ers will probably pick well before 28, which makes it an upgrade, and next years draft is supposed to be deeper.

Let's face it, the only thing that stopped the patriots from winning the last two years was crooked Nfl officiating. I'm not saying that the NFL is helping Manning win for marketing purposes, quite the contrary. BUT IT SURE LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE TAKING MILLIONS IN BRIBES FROM THE OWNER OF THE COLTS.
Even the NFL apologized to the Patriots a week after the Championship game with the Colts. All these fabricated calls that are rarely if never made, called against the Patriots. Then what about all the non calls against the Colts? Chicago didn't have a chance! *asterik* Colts Championship. I will never acknowledge the Colts as winning a Chumpionship. Because they're Chumps.
Let's flash back 2 years. Notice that the referees took the Patriots out of the game each & every time they were about to take control with Denver? Shame NFL, you're about to lose credibility. What about the Colts-Pittsburgh game? The NFL referees did everything they could to have the Colts win that game. The only thing that beat the NFL referees & the Colts were Ben R's game saving tackle.
The Patriots should receice the #1 pick in the draft as compensation during the next 5 years for NFL organized corruption against the Patriots along with a $1 billion settlement.

Having spent my life as a New England native and avid fan of local sports teams I will forever remember two things from my youth. The fall always produced a Red Sox crumble and a bad Patriots team. Aside from the '85 "I can't believe they made it that far" team the Pats have been a long time doormat to the league. Long gone are those days and gratification needs to be handed out. Thanks to Mr. Kraft, The Tuna, Drew Bledsoe, Bill (rename the trophy) Belichick, Scott Pioli, Tom Brady and countless other professionals that have recently dawned the attire of the flying Elvis, I am in awe of what this franchise has accomplished. This recent influx of free agency and draft has just set this team up, once again, to reign supreme for a number of years to come. With all due respect to the past dynastys such as the Steelers, Cowboys, Packers and Niners I truely believe the future for the Patriots could possibly rewrite all the record books. As I have read all the posts before me I too am excited to see what the product on the field will be this year. Make ready your recording devices folks because there is potential for this team to make history. IN BILL WE TRUST!!!!!

Trust me, I'm as happy as the rest of you about getting Randy on the team, but I don't see him posting a record number of receptions or yards. Everyone seems to forget that the Pats spread the ball around. This means Randy will likely only average 4-5 catches per game. While Stallworth will see about the same. I wouldn't be surprised to see Welker as being the leading receiver on the team in terms of catches with Watson close behind. Randy will score touchdowns though. Poor Mike Vrabel just lost his job near the endzone. There's also a number of questions to be answered. Will Maroney be able to stay healthy carrying the full load? Will we get Assante signed to solidify our DB situation? Where is Adalius going to play (ILB or OLB)? And is our LB Corps getting too slow? The Pats are improved... but not perfect. While I'm not worried about the Colts, I am worried about SD. They still have one heck of a team.

Well, if they made trophies for the best off-season this year, it would go to the Pats. Bringing in high-profile free agents, however, does not guarantee a Super Bowl winning team. We just have to see what happnes, although the Patriots are probably the team to beat, and I'm sure all the other 31 teams know this. Now that Tom Brady actually has some weapons, no disrespect to Reche Caldwell, and Jabar Gaffney, I can't wait to see what this offense does. Although I don't expect record breaking numbers, I envision Brady throwing for around 4,000 yards, or more, and around 30 touchdowns. Also, I envision either Moss, or Stallworth, having 1,000 recieving yards, with around 7-9 touchdowns. You think that's reasonable?
