Super Bowl 2012: Latest Injury News and Updates for Giants vs. Patriots
Scott Halleran/Getty Images
The New York Giants and the New England Patriots are getting ready to face off at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2012 Super Bowl.
As Eli Manning and Tom Brady get ready to do their thing, it's also important to remember the a few players are dealing with injury issues.
Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots superstar tight end, is the biggest injury storyline today as he is dealing with a high ankle sprain. Gronkowski is listed as questionable, but is fully expected to play. How effective will he be? Time will tell as the Patriots are sure to look to him early and often.
For the Giants, everyone on the injury report is listed as probable, but their biggest injury news has to be their starting wideout, Hakeem Nicks, who has a shoulder injury. If Nicks is healthy, he forms an almost unstoppable tandem with Victor Cruz.

So that's that - thanks for joining us here on the Injury Live Blog. Lots of guys went down, but many got back up.
It's a Super Bowl. Short a torn ACL, you get up.
See you guys back here soon!

Rolle is back in the game. Amukamara is struggling so Rolle is actually a step back up.

Antrel Rolle down. Rolle has struggled but the Giants can't afford to lose more guys.

Yuck. Just saw Ballard try to cut on broadcast. And fall. Not good.

Michelle Trafoya says Ballard has a knee sprain, will try to return.

Another Giants tight end injury as Jake Ballard goes down. Run over by Spikes at the snap. Will update momentarily.

Michele Trafoya is saying on NBC that Brady is rotating his shoulder like it bothers him, but otherwise no medical attention right now.

Nicks with a catch and a strip. Giants recover—looks like Nicks is ok.

Dropping like flies—Brady favoring his arm. Being checked out by trainers, Hoyer warming up.
If he's down, absolutely huge.
Jason Pierre-Paul was just down on the field with trainers - jogged off the field. Should be fine. Will monitor but he has to be out for a play anyway.

Patrick Chung just lit up Hakeem Nicks. Nicks off the field. Will update if he's hurt.

Quick halftime thoughts:
You can't leave Tom Brady that much time. You can't let the Pats hang like that.
Sucks to see Beckum go down—torn ACL can cost him the 2012 season as well, which was a contract year for him.
Giants are mentally tough—but extra long halftime means more time to dwell on the loss of the lead.
Jets have to be overjoyed they let Weatherford, the Giants' punter, go preseason.
Giants need to start hitting their wide receivers more. Manningham needs to catch the balls going off his hands but Cruz and Nicks need to reappear.
Gronkowksi not seeing a ton of action and again, I wonder how he'll hold up with a long layoff. Wouldn't you use him more early?
Back with more as I hear more.

Greg Bedard reporting Beckum is done for the day with a torn ACL. That's a bummer.

CBS' Clark Judge says Beckum went to the lockerroom on a cart. Will update as we have news.

Travis Beckum just went down - update as soon as I see one...

Gronkowski wasn't on the field on that last 3rd down.

I have an injury update - tackling is clearly hurt, possibly down and not on the field.
Tom Curran, covering the Pats for WEEI is saying that word from the sideline is that Gronkowski is looking winded and coaches are checking his status frequently.
As I saw several times on twitter, Gronk can come hot out of the gate. The key will be how he is after the half—when the shot he likely took wears off and he's had a long time to rest between halves.

Boston Herald beat writer Ian Rapoport is seeing the same thing I am on NBC.com—Gronk's walking a bit gingerly and while Rapoport didn't see a limp, I saw it at least once on the non-TV feed.
Ramses Barden won't play - but he gets his moment on the field pregame

Interesting note: inactive players can still do pregame warmups, padded no less according to Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News.

Here are the inactives for each team today from Rotoworld:
Giants declared WR Ramses Barden, OL Jim Cordle, RB Da'Rel Scott, DE Justin Trattou, DT Jimmy Kennedy, OT James Brewer, and LB Mark Herzlich inactive for Super Bowl XLVI against the Patriots.
The Pats' inactives are QB Ryan Mallett, RB Kevin Faulk, RB Shane Vereen, LB Gary Guyton, OG Donald Thomas, G/C Nick McDonald, and DE Ron Brace.
Gronkowski is officially active. Interestingly, so is Chad Ochocinco, though his inactivity has been largely due to just not being good, not injury.

Will Carroll aka @InjuryExpert on Twitter says he still hasn't seen Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski on the field.
Because you need to know every second of his whereabouts. They're likely resting him as long as possible to keep him good to go (and the Giants in the dark) at game time.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick has said tight end Rob Gronkowski will "definitely" play today. NBC's Alex Flanagan had this to say on twitter:
Rob Gronkowski hasn't gone full speed in 2 weeks.BB tells me he doesn't see him not playing in the Super Bowl, doesn't know how much tho
You have to assume that Gronk will play unless he has a leg amputated—it's the Super Bowl after all. However, we know how fast a loose Belichick plays with the injury info so really how much he'll play is truly up for debate.
He could be a red herring. He could be targeted a lot. He could play three snaps and end up hurt again.
Be sure that even if he's barely able to walk, the Pats will eek every ounce of ability out of him today.
