"Get up offa that thing!" Putting James Brown music in ads is like putting ranch on pizza—it's just better that way.

Music aside, plenty of "Awww" here with the dog, and a Big Fat "Spoiler Alert," too. If you haven't seen it already, watch this ad before reading on.

So, the twist. The last 30 seconds of this spot completely upstage the rest of the advertisement—you know it, I know it, the people at the agency who conceived this Big Game promo for the new Beetle know it. Doesn't mean you have to like it, though.

I don't.

It's unnecessary and forced (no Jedi pun intended). The Star Wars theme for the Volkswagen commercials jumped its proverbial shark with this one. It wasn't necessary to pan out to the Mos Eisley Cantina and do the whole Vader bit.

Why? Because the dog part was cute enough to carry this spot on its own. Dug the James Brown music, the dragging the weights with the blankets, the tennis ball/stairs bit. Funny and cute, for sure. And the part with the food scraps hitting the ground. Come on...everybody who's been around a dog for a minimum of five seconds in their lives has to appreciate that part.

Still, Star Wars endures. People just love it so, so much. The YouTube like ratio on this spot is killer, and it's not just because of the cute dog. The lore of Lucas played a part as well.
