The Manager of the year award is very young and has only been presented twice. The best GM is supposed to be a matter of opinion and not supposed to be a one-year accomplishment. Although it is being presented in Vegas with the real awards, the NHL still has a chance to scrap the hardware before it becomes too popular.

The best GM is the man who puts the' best team together. The best team wins the Stanley Cup, so as a result, the GM of that team should get the award every year. So far Don Maloney of the Coyotes and Mike Gillis of the Canucks have received this award despite the fact that results prove they were not the best GMs in the two years. Sure, each team did better than expected, but that should be a team accomplishment and not an individual award.

The fact of the matter is when this award is given to someone who did not win the Cup it is inaccurate. When it is given to the right person it is repetitive. No GM who wins the Stanley Cup would care about getting the management trophy and why should they?

Bettman, please eliminate this before it leads to owner/president/assistant coach or any other ego boosting award someone will find necessary. The game of hockey is not about making everybody feel good about themselves. If the NHL awards want to be taken seriously, the League should drop this award immediately.
