Utah Is Better Than Florida, Says Alabama Fan

The wrong team is playing Oklahoma for the BCS National Championship in Miami on Jan. 8, 2009.

Due to the fact that Alabama is the only team to have played both the Florida Gators and the Utah Utes, it puts Alabama fans in the unique position of being able to be judge and jury as to who is the superior team.

I can say without a doubt that Florida does not belong in Miami playing for the National Championship this week.

Utah may be the best football team in Division I football. The only way we will ever know for certain is to cancel Florida's game with Oklahoma and reschedule a match between the Utah Utes and the Oklahoma Sooners.

The facts are clear: Utah beat Alabama more convincingly than Florida did, and if there is any justice in this world, someone will stop Thursday's game before it is too late for Utah and let the Utes have their day in court.

The numbers are indisputable...Utah 31, Alabama 17; Florida 31, Alabama 20.

Total yards...Utah 349, Alabama 208; Florida 358, Alabama 323.

The difference is clear, and without a doubt, Utah is better. 

Now I know some of you Florida fans are going to say that Alabama didn't have Andre Smith and lost his backup early in the game, causing Alabama to have to improvise its offensive line, the very reason they had won 12 previous games this year. 

Others will say that Alabama was disappointed to be playing Utah in the Sugar Bowl instead of playing Oklahoma in Miami, and because of that came out flat and fell behind too far to catch up.

Some may even say Meyer helped Whittingham and thus that is why Utah looked better against Alabama than Florida did.

Those excuses do not erase the fact that Alabama was never in this game from the starting whistle.

Well, all I can say is if he did help Wittingham, it may have backfired on Florida because now Utah looks like they belong in the BCS National Championship Game instead of the Florida Gators. 

How ironic it would be if Florida wins the BCS game only to face a controversy over who is really No.1 caused by Florida's own Urban Meyer helping Utah so much that Utah looked better than Florida against Alabama. 

The SEC Championship Game between Alabama and Florida went back and forth and was finally settled late in the fourth quarter. The Sugar Bowl was over before it got started.

Utah is as good as Florida on offense, and they are better than Florida on defense.

Utah is a great team and has terrific fans. I was in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl myself, as I was in Atlanta, and Utah's fans were very humble before and after the game, unlike the arrogant and obnoxious Florida fans I had to deal with in Atlanta.

As an SEC fan it pains me to say this, but Florida should step aside and let the better team have their day. 

If Urban Meyer is really still as close to Whittingham and Utah as people claim, then he should make another friendly gesture and withdraw the Gators from the BCS Championship Game and let the real No. 1 team play for it all the marbles in Miami.

I know that this will not happen, but just keep this in mind as you watch Florida play Thursday night: Utah is a better team than Florida.

If I were the Florida Athletic Director, I would certainly make contingency plans to replace Meyer with Whittingham as soon as Meyer leaves for Notre Dame next year.

Alabama fans were upset when it was reported that Urban Meyer was helping Kyle Whittingham with the Alabama game plan.

I now think after seeing both teams play I can plainly see that there was nothing to worry about. Urban Meyer couldn't teach Whittingham a thing.

Urban Meyer needs to be getting on the phone with Whittingham and getting advice from him on how to beat Oklahoma, because the wrong coach has been giving advice in this case.

Congratulations to Utah for winning the Sugar Bowl, and if it is any consolation, this Alabama fan says that Utah is the real No. 1!
