When a team determines the proper "core" to build a franchise around for the future, there are many factors—such as age, skill, leadership and marketability—that are at the forefront.

Everyone would love to develop a baby-faced superstar with Derek Jeter’s image and Miguel Cabrera’s bat, but only a few teams are lucky enough to possess a true cornerstone for the better part of a decade.

When determining the criteria for this list, I wanted to keep things simple but realistic. Generally, a player must be younger than 30 years old, an established superstar (no hotshot rookies need apply) and have a name/face that translates off the field.

As you’ll see from the list, there are some exceptions made on the age criterion—certain players are simply too fabulous and have too much to give the game still to be omitted.
