Like it or not, there are two types of female tennis players that transcend the sport and become truly iconic: Those who are at the top of their game, and those who become sex symbols.

Some, like Martina Navratilova, do so because they are the former. Some, like Anna Kournikova, do so because they are the latter.

And the rare few do so because they are both. That's where Caroline Wozniacki comes into play.

Most non-tennis fans know who Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams are.

Why?

Because they've each won a Grand Slam title, and they've each been deemed a sex symbol.

They've become iconic outside of the tennis world but remained ambassadors for the game because they've reached the top ranking in the tennis world and won a Grand Slam title. (Sharapova and Williams more consistently, of course.)

Caroline Wozniacki has the ability to be an iconic figure outside of the tennis world. She's a gorgeous and marketable woman, is already the top-rated player in the world and...hasn't yet won a Grand Slam title.

This is what Wozniacki needs to replace Sharapova as the game's most marketable player. She needs the segment of time blocked off for her on SportsCenter after a Grand Slam win. She needs the requests for advertisements after she hoists her trophy, perhaps more so in America than she's already received internationally.

She needs, for lack of a better term, a brand name appeal in America.

I can hear the counter-argument now—a woman shouldn't need to be sexy to be truly marketable or iconic.

You're right, but let's be honest—sex sells. Sharapova, Kournikova, Ivanovic, Maria Kirilenko, even Chris Evert back in the day are proof of that.

And how many women are out there that aren't tennis fans but know who Rafeal Nadal is or Andre Agassi was because of sex appeal?

Wozniacki is a marketing perfect storm—beautiful, young, incredibly talented and unlikely to fall out of a top five to 10 ranking in the world anytime soon.

But until she wins that Grand Slam title, her marketability will be capped. And really, a string of success would catapult her into Sharapova status rather quickly.

It's time for Woz to become a household name.
