Well, there go any rumors about JvR. Either that, or Paul Holmgren is beginning to get crafty with smokescreens.
The Philadelphia Flyers issued a statement today regarding forward James van Riemsdyk.
"James was hit in the head in each of our last two games. He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion," Holmgren said in his statement.
Van Riemsdyk, who was already reportedly playing through two separate injures he sustained earlier in the season, will now sit out once again, this time with a concussion.
"He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion," Holmgren added.
The Flyers just can't seem to get a break. Concussions have been absolutely dominating the Flyers lineup, and just when it seems like a player is getting healthy, another one is going down with another injury. Philadelphia is already without stalwart Chris Pronger for the remainder of the season, and now it looks as though they may have to go without van Riemsdyk as well.
This news comes as a shock, as just yesterday there were multiple reports (TSN and Philadelphia Daily News reports discussed via NHL.com here) that stated the Flyers and Toronto Maple Leafs were discussing a trade that would send JvR to Toronto for defenseman Luke Schenn.
Could this news of a concussion cause a deal between the two teams to be nixed? Could it be a smoke screen to keep the attention off the two clubs? Or perhaps the deal will go through once more is known about van Riemsdyk's status?
What does JvR's injury mean for the Flyers?
This news certainly has me asking more questions, and so far there haven't been a bunch of answers. Only time will tell what will happen next in this whirlwind of a season for Philadelphia, but it certainly isn't looking very good right now.
CSN Philly's Tim Panaccio (@tpanotchCSN) also tweeted this during the morning skate:
"I asked him why he was leaving skate and he just smiled."
With van Riemsdyk out, the Flyers will look to either Jody Shelley or Zac Rinaldo to take his spot in the lineup tonight against the Nashville Predators. My guess is they'll go with Rinaldo, as he's been stellar so far this year.
So, what does this injury mean for the Flyers? Will they now be in the market for a forward as well?
