I wrote a speculation article a few days ago discussing the possibility that the Philadelphia Flyers could be in trade talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs regarding highly-touted defenseman Luke Schenn. It seems that all that speculation had some legs after all.
Late yesterday, Adam Kimmelman of NHL.com reported that the Flyers and Leafs are indeed discussing a trade. In the article, Kimmelman writes that the Flyers and Leafs are discussing a trade that would send former second overall pick James van Riemsdyk to Toronto in exchange for a package deal of Schenn and other players and/or picks that were not named.
I did a bit of digging once the discussions were finally confirmed, and while I couldn't confirm anything, I get the impression the potential trade may look something like this:
To Philadelphia: Luke Schenn, another forward (Bozak/Kulemin/Kadri)
To Toronto: James van Riemsdyk, second-round pick, (possible pick/prospect)
As I said, I couldn't get confirmation on specifics, but as I understand it, the deal will involve more than just JvR and Luke Schenn.
After the reports came out, the Flyers and Brian Burke denied the reports. A Flyers official simply said, "It's not happening," while Burke rejected the notion as well, but didn't exactly deny that the two sides were discussing some sort of trade.
Of course, these comments don't really mean much. The GMs aren't going to admit what they are discussing. They'd prefer to keep that private. Does anybody still remember over the summer when Holmgren denied reports that he was trading Jeff Carter to Columbus, only to trade him days later? I know I haven't forgotten that.
Do you think this trade will come to fruition?
As of now, nothing has happened, but these talks could be the beginning of something big. The fact that van Riemsdyk is being discussed in trade talks may come as a surprise to most Philly fans, as he just signed a six-year contract extension at the beginning of the season and was thought to be one of those guys that was untouchable. Unfortunately for him, it looks as though as nobody is untouchable these days.
I expect that any potential deal will be done way before the February 27 trade deadline, as Burke likes to get his business done beforehand. The coming days will surely be interesting for both clubs, and fans will be on the edge of their seat until a deal is reached.
All we can do now is wait. If I hear anything new, I'll be sure to update you guys. If you haven't already, add me on Twitter. When I hear breaking news, I'll be on twitter updating anything I hear.
So, what do you guys think of this potential trade?
