UFC 142: Chad Mendes and Shocking Upsets That Will Happen

T.J. Mcaloon@@tjmcaloonContributorJanuary 14, 2012

With UFC 142 from Rio de Janeiro, it makes for UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo a heavy favorite to retain his belt in the main event. However, he goes up against Chad Mendes, who has yet to lose in his career with the UFC.

It is why this fight, and these other ones, will end in a shocking upset hardly anyone will see coming.

Chad Mendes over Jose Aldo

Mendes is 11-0-0 in his career with the UFC, which means he has yet to tap out, lose a decision or have a fight stopped because of a knockout. Mendes has fought his way up through the featherweight ranks to earn a chance against Aldo.

If this fight wasn’t in Mendes’ home country of Brazil, the odds against Mendes wouldn’t be so much.

However, the line against the challenger is currently at plus-200. If Mendes can go the distance with Aldo, he is almost guaranteed to win. In Mendes’ last six fights, five of his victories have come via decision.

Mendes’ wrestling technique, plus his speed and power, can keep him in this fight. He just has to not get overwhelmed by the hometown crowd behind Aldo.

Mike Massenzio over Rousimar Palhares

Massenzio is one of the bigger underdogs on the UFC 142 card. I’ve seen Massenzio as high as a plus-400 dog, while Palhares as much as minus-550—which is surprising, since Massenzio is the bigger fighter at 6’2” compared to Palhares who is 5’8”.

Massenzio is one of those fighters who doesn’t have one specialty, as he is very well-rounded.

What may have kept Massenzio from being favored more in this match is because he has lost three of his last five fights. However, two of those fights went the distance in the third round.

Massenzio will use his height advantage over Palhares at UFC 142, and will shock the world with his victory.

Carlo Prater over Erick Silva

These two fighters are representing their home country of Brazil in this fight. However, with Silva having the better MMA record of 13-1, he is coming into the fight as the favorite.

However, Prater is the more decorated fighter, having more MMA fights (40). Prater is making his UFC debut in this fight against Silva, who is coming off of his debut fight.

With the odds against Prater at plus-400, he looks to be a long shot to win in his first UFC fight. However, Prater has won his last four MMA fights, and in each fight he has won in the first round.

You can expect Prater to come out swinging against Silva, with another first-round victory.

These three fighters are heavy underdogs, but will shock the UFC world when they pull off a huge victory at UFC 142. Hopefully, you will pick these fighters, and come away looking smarter for going against the favorite.
