Just hours before the Philadelphia Eagles' wild card playoff game in Minnesota, the Boston Globe reported a story citing a quote from Jeffrie Lurie (Eagles' CEO) that the team has "every intention" of bringing back quarterback Donovan McNabb for the 2009 season.
This could not have come at a better time, as the Eagles are now advancing to the Divisional round of the NFC playoffs to face the division-rival New York Giants.
Lurie made the announcement public before the game in an attempt to demonstrate to the Philadelphia fan base the team's intention of retaining McNabb, no matter the outcome of the playoff game against the Vikings.
After being benched in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens, many questioned McNabb's future with the Eagles.
Had that been the final game of the season, this announcement would have probably been a much bigger shock. But considering McNabb's fantastic play over the last five games of the year, bringing him back is the only move that makes sense.
Given this news, it is only logical to assume that the Eagles also plan on retaining head coach Andy Reid. Something that should come as a shock only to those outside of Philadelphia.
McNabb & Co. will travel north next Sunday when they face off against the defending Super Bowl champion Giants for the right to play in the NFC Championship Game.
