It seems as if the Cincinnati Reds have moved on from the Francisco Cordero era.
According to ESPN, former Philadelphia Phillies closer Ryan Madson has agreed to sign a one-year, $8.5 million contract to join the Queen City bullpen.
The 31-year-old righty went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA and 32 saves in 34 attempts after Brad Lidge went on the DL. Madson was 47-30 with a 3.59 ERA in eight seasons with the Phillies.
Philadelphia signed former Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, $50 million deal in November, halting talks of a re-signing for Madson.
Cincinnati was on the hunt for a closer after deciding not to give Cordero another shot on the mound. The Reds watched names like Huston Street, Andrew Bailey, Joe Nathan and Matt Capps all find new teams or sign extensions, so grabbing Madson was a no-brainer.
Cordero completed 150 saves in 174 attempts (86.2 percent) in four seasons for Cincinnati. He will continue serving as a free agent.
