Goals
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool): 13' (pen.)
Full time: 0-1
The final whistle blows and Liverpool have won. They'll take a one-goal advantage and one away goal back with them to Anfield for the second leg in two weeks' time.
That away goal will only matter if the aggregate scores are tied after extra time, but it could still prove valuable.
Manchester City played much better in the second half but their lack of width and creativity proved fatal. Liverpool's bright opening and Steven Gerrard's early penalty turned out to be enough.
Join us for full reaction throughout the night.
90+2
Savic gets a chance when the ball falls to him just outside the box. His shot doesn't make it through the mass of bodies in the box.
Kolarov then falls over in the box, clearly looking for a foul.
90+1
Agüero heads just over the bar!
That was close. Could City pull off a late goal?
90th minute: 0-1
"You'll Never Walk Alone" rings out inside the Etihad.
We're headed to stoppage time with Liverpool ahead.
86th minute: Mancini!
Roberto Mancini is upset over a throw-in call that has gone against City.
Dude. Choose your battles better, Bobby.
84th minute: Fisticuffs!
Carragher and Nasri get into a disagreement. Jordan Henderson butts in and earns himself a push in the chest.
Carragher and Nasri both earn bookings.
82nd minute: City half-chance
Milner steadies the ball in the middle of the pitch, takes a few touches and scuffs a weak shot past the far post from about 25 yards.
Meh.
80th minute: Liverpool sub
Craig Bellamy, who's been mostly anonymous, leaves the pitch to a warm ovation from his former fans.
Jamie Carragher replaces him.
78th minute: 0-1
A graphic shows that Manchester City have had 65 percent of the possession in the second half.
If anything, that seems a bit low.
77th minute: 0-1
City press again but the move ends with a poor cross.
Next time down, Kolarov sends a speculative shoot from the left wing way over the goal.
The home crowd sure is quiet.
73rd minute: 0-1
Kolarov sends a dangerous-looking free kick through the Liverpool box with his first touch. No one is tall enough to meet it, though.
72nd minute: City sub
Nigel De Jong heads off the pitch. Aleksandar Kolarov comes on.
That's City's final substitution. They'll have to find an equalizer with the players they have on the field.
71st minute: 0-1
A lull in the action allows us to confirm that it was in fact Adam Johnson who was subbed out for Edin Dzeko.
67th minute: 0-1
City are really pressing their advantage now.
An Agüero attack had to be cut out by Glen Johnson's last-ditch tackle moments ago, and City seem to push forward with every pass.
Can they find an equalizer?
66th minute: City sub
Edin Dzeko enters the match, replacing Adam Johnson (we think). Confirmation to come.
65th minute: 0-1
Agüero does well to set himself up for a shot with nice dribbling just outside the Liverpool box.
He turns and beats three defenders but then shoots tamely at Reina.
64th minute: 0-1
Liverpool still lead 1-0 but Manchester City have controlled this second half.
City will have to come up with something new if they're going to score, though. Right now it's not quite creative enough.
Glen Johnson, meanwhile, gives Liverpool fans heart attacks everywhere by chesting the ball down to Reina with a Manchester City attacker less than five yards away.
That took balls.
59th minute: City chance!
City win another corner kick. They're really coming with an onslaught this half
Richards flies through the box and shoots a header straight down—but right at Reina.
Jose Enrique replaces Downing.
57th minute: 0-1
City are running at Liverpool much faster and with much more purpose so far in the second half.
Liverpool's defense, to their credit, have withstood the challenge well.
Jose Enrique is getting ready to come on for Liverpool.
54th minute: 0-1
Skrtel reads the ball well and muscles Agüero off the ball. City win a corner but nothing comes of it.
Liverpool counter quickly but can't find a shot.
This match is heating up.
53rd minute: 0-1
City are still dominating possession. Surely Liverpool don't want to sit back on just this one goal.
Right?
51st minute: 0-1
Nasri, who's been pretty lively since coming on, works a few neat passes along the edge of the Liverpool box.
Neither he nor City can find a way through yet, though.
49th minute: 0-1
It's been all City so far. Liverpool are letting their hosts knock the ball around. They don't mind, so long as City don't approach the goal.
47th minute: 0-1
City earn an early corner. They already look better.
We wonder what Mancini said at the break.
Second half kickoff
Liverpool get the second half under way.
