I'm sure by now everyone is a bit sick of hearing me report about the Philadelphia Flyers and their interest in Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason, but something stuck me last night that I didn't pick up on right away.
Sometimes, when I hear trade rumors, sources and other websites will drop a hint as to other potential moves, but won't fully divulge all of the information. While I'm almost certainly convinced that the Philadelphia Flyers are interested in Tim Gleason at this point, there may be another player the Flyers have an interest in—one that I can't say I saw coming.
Two days ago, Eklund from HockeyBuzz.com reported that the Flyers do indeed have an interest in Tim Gleason, which came as no surprise to me. However, Eklund mentioned something that I had not yet heard up until then. He reported that the Flyers may be working out a two-for-one deal, which would send over another player in addition to Tim Gleason.
I did a little bit of digging, but came up short. Today, however, I think I may have finally found out the name of the player who the Flyers may be looking to acquire.
Luke DeCock of NewsObserver.com is reporting that there could be a team interested in Ruutu's services, and when you begin to piece together some of the information, it seems as though the Flyers might just be that team.
A trade probably wouldn't surprise Ruutu too much, as he's been there before. He was traded back in 2008 to the Carolina Hurricanes for Andrew Ladd, who went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks two years later.
Would you like to add Tuomo Ruutu to the Flyers?
Tim Gleason also offered some comments on the situation as well.
"We're still trying to make the playoffs here, but at the same time, teams above us are trying to get better," Gleason said. "That's the way the system works. It's something you can't control. You just have to move on."
It might be tough for the Flyers to acquire a player like Ruutu, as he has a $3.8 million salary this season. That said, he is an unrestricted free agent at season's end, so his new contract could be negotiable on July 1.
Ruutu brings a tough physical presence, and plays a gritty style—something the Flyers have seemed to be lacking as of late. He's got 14 goals and nine assists on the season and would be a great fit in Philadelphia's already potent, dynamic offense.
While I haven't been able to get confirmation whether Ruutu is the "other man" the Flyers may be interested in, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. Ruutu could bring more life to their offense, not that they really need too much offense.
So, what do you think? Would you like to see Tuomo Ruutu in the orange and black?
