The Clemson Tigers were this close to taking the lead over the West Virginia Mountaineers in the second quarter of the Orange Bowl.

Instead, the Tigers gave the Mountaineers seven points. It was unexpected. Also awesome.

In it, you'll see Andre Ellington get lost in a pile of bodies at the West Virginia one-yard line. Next thing you knew, the ball was out and Darwin Cook was sprinting towards the opposite end zone. Roughly 99 yards later, he got there.

Instead of a 24-21 deficit, West Virginia had itself a 28-17 lead after the extra point.

Wait, so what happened?

Good question. The slow-mo replays show Ellington disappear into the pile, but after that a lot of limbs get in the way and it's difficult to tell how the ball got poked out. It's also difficult to tell whether or not Ellington was down.

But the officials reviewed it and couldn't find any reasons to overturn the call. And in the officials we trust, right?

Unfortunately yes. On the bright side, it's hard to argue with them in this case. West Virginia capitalized on a fluky play, but the seven points the Mountaineers got out of it are legit.

One thing that's for sure is that the Clemson faithful took this touchdown like a punch to the gut. They were out in force at Sun Life Stadium, but you could hear a pin drop in the place after Cook rumbled in for six.

The score took the wind out of Clemson's sails too. The Tigers only managed 16 points after this score. The Mountaineers piled on an extra 42 and won 70-33.
