Bowl Schedule 2012: Grading the Best Uniforms of the Jan. 2 Games

0 of 10

One of the most exciting parts about college football bowl games is how the coaches will prepare their teams with extra time. Because of this extra time, the teams are able to install new formations and sets that we have not yet seen.

The football operations people like to use this time to introduce new things such as uniforms. Some teams really shake things up, while others always go the traditional route. As a result, here are the top uniforms of the games from Monday's schedule.

No. 10: Houston Cougars

1 of 10

The Houston Cougars showed they belong on the field with the big boys Monday, but their uniforms still have a long way to go. They do not have the benefit of tradition and lack the creativity of the newer style uniforms.

I guess the best way to describe them is simple.

No. 9: Penn State Nittany Lions

2 of 10

Penn State has the type of uniforms that are likable because of the tradition but are also a little too bland.  The Nittany Lions wore their dark jerseys and white helmet with a single stripe. The color scheme is good, but the uniforms just seem to be missing something.

They're not horrific; they're just not great.

No. 8: Oregon Ducks

3 of 10

I am usually a defender of Oregon and its ever-changing uniforms. While there is part of me that is a traditionalist, there is also the part of me that likes variety. However, the Oregon Ducks went a step too far with their shiny Rose Bowl helmets.

Outside of the helmets, the uniforms were once again impressive. The uniqueness of their uniforms match the uniqueness of their high scoring offense.

No. 7: South Carolina Gamecocks

4 of 10

The Gamecocks came out in their primarily garnet uniforms. While I love the black uniforms they wear from time to time, I am not a big fan of these. Too much garnet can be an eyesore, and so is the case with these uniforms.

They need to dump these in favor of the black ones permanently.

No.6 : Florida Gators

5 of 10

The Florida Gators came out in their blue and orange home uniforms.  While I am not a big fan of the color scheme, they’re not horrific. The uniforms they wore are my least favorite of the ones they wear.

The orange helmet and blue jerseys, however, have become synonymous with Florida football.

No. 5: Michigan State Spartans

6 of 10

The Spartans have one of the most underrated uniforms in college football. All of their uniforms are fashionable, but I like the white uniforms the best. Many people love the helmet of the University of Michigan, but I will take the green version from the boys in Lansing.

No. 4: Nebraska Cornhuskers

7 of 10

The Cornhuskers played in their traditional white away uniforms today and as always oozed with tradition. Nebraska is one of those teams that never needs to adjust its uniforms because of the tradition they carry.

For many fans, the sight of the Nebraska uniforms take them back to their childhood, when they use to watch the Cornhuskers around the TV with their family.

No. 3: The Ohio State Buckeyes

8 of 10

The Buckeyes wore their away uniforms today against Florida.  While they are not as impressive as their home uniforms, they are still one of the best in football.

Their silver helmet and pants are one of the most recognizable in football.  While the scarlet and gray has been a disappointment on the football field, they have still remained solid in retail stores.

No. 2: Georgia Bulldogs

9 of 10

The Georgia Bulldog uniforms are one of the most recognized uniforms in college football. The red helmets and silver britches are as recognizable as almost any uniform in all of sports.

While the black jerseys are the best in college football the red ones are right up there as well. In other words, as long as they don’t come out in the Power Ranger version used in the first game of the season, they should be fine.

No. 1: Oklahoma State Cowboys

10 of 10

Oklahoma State came out in the black jerseys today in the Fiesta Bowl. While the Cowboys were unfairly left out of the BCS championship game, they are the winner of the Jan. 2 uniform competition.

The uniforms are both sleek and intimidating. Unlike Tennessee, which failed at the black and orange combination a few seasons ago, the Cowboys have the perfect blend.
