Game time! After over a month of waiting, we finally get to see Nebraska take the field for one last time before the long spring and summer of the college football offseason. Follow along here to keep up with what's happening during the game, as well as a fair bit of snark about the announcers, players, coaches or anything else worthy of a little "extra" observation.
And, if you'd like to interact with me during the game, you can e-mail me at patrickrunge@gmail.com, or follow me on Twitter @patrickrunge. Looking forward to hearing from you!
And, that's your ballgame. The HBC gets drenched as Nebraska gets embarrassed by South Carolina 30-13. As we've seen time and time (and time, and time, and time, and time) again, Nebraska is unable to respond to adversity -- unless Todd Bauserman is the opposing quarterback.
NU ends the season at 9-4, with losses of 48-17, 45-17, and 30-13. Bo Pelini has all of his guys on the sidelines. The end of 2011 was disappointing, but more importantly, it sets up the 2012 season with some legitimate questions that need to be answered by Pelini. Right now, it appears Nebraska's high-water point was Pelini's "Nebraska's back, and we're here to stay" moment after the Holiday Bowl. In 2009. After beating a mediocre Arizona team.
Thanks for following along today. Enjoy the rest of your bowl day!
Yikes. Three straight sacks for South Carolina on Martinez, and he never had a shot in any of them. Nebraska has officially checked out of this game. It's going to be a long, long offseason after this second-half performance from NU.
So, two bowl games in a row where Nebraska puts up an ugly performance. This one wasn't a no-show like the Holiday Bowl, but there was also no "it was a rematch" excuse. NU was primed for this one and is about to get housed. Where does that leave NU going into the offseason?
Of course they did. Shaw tucks and runs and converts another fourth down, and on the next play Kenny Miles punches the ball in. Nebraska's second half collapse is complete. South Carolina 30-13 Nebraska.
That just may be your ballgame, kids. South Carolina goes for it on fourth and one at the Nebraska 41, and get it. Under five minutes to go, and Carolina now has a first down on the NU 35. Absent a turnover, hard to see a way for NU to come back 10 points.
The sun is starting to set on Nebraska's bowl season. Under 10 minutes left, NU punts the ball back to South Carolina inside the Gamecocks' 40. Blackshirts need to get a stop -- or a turnover to spark a misfiring NU offense. Yeah, like that sentence hasn't been written about a thousand times in the last few years by Nebraska writers.
Maybe not! NU converts a third and fifteen with a gorgeous stick throw from Martinez to Kenny Bell!
Ye gods. Tim Marlowe drops a gift-wrapped pass at midfield, then NU commits a false start. Anyone else feel like they've seen this movie?
Touchdown! After converting a third-and-fifteen, Shaw hits Kenny Miles for a touchdown. South Carolina takes a ten-point lead, and looks to be pretty comfortably in control. Gamecocks' offense really didn't seem to miss Alshon Jeffrey on that drive. South Carolina 23-13 Nebraska.
Andrew Green looks like he's legit as the #1 corner for Nebraska next year. And given how Ciante Evans is playing, the #2 corner is totally up for grabs.
Wow. Steve Spurrier's headset has a tag that says "HBC," assumedly for Head Ball Coach. Cute.
Oh, and Martinez is kinda starting to look like the T-Magic from the last Big 12 title game. NU has to punt from inside its own 10 yard line. Kind of get the feeling that the next score wins in this game.
Holy cats! Alshown Jeffrey and Alfonzo Dennard were just ejected from the game for a dustup after a third down play. Jeffrey shoved Dennard, and Dennard responded with a punch. Talk about a game-changing play. If nothing else, that takes some guts from the refs to make that call. Wow. Talk about a game with a bunch of "I've never seen that before" moments.
Did I say third? I meant fourth. Cue Bo Pelini explosion in three, two, one ...
Ugh. Third penalty on the drive for Nebraska. NU trying hard to catch up with Carolina for bonehead plays in the second half.
Three and out! The Blackshirts answer the bell and stop South Carolina, getting the ball back at the NU 33 yard line. Andrew Green, rather than Alfonzo Dennard, on Alshown Jeffrey on third down.
Jinx! Gilmore and Tessatore spent five minutes telling the world how Nebraska had three points in its back pocket, and how the 37-yard attempt was a gimmie. So, of course, Brett Maher pushes it right. Not hard to see that coming. But, don't worry. Bo Pelini sez NU will be just fine.
If nothing else, the first half can put away the "dominant SEC" talk. NU the more physical team, well ahead in total yards outside two long passes.
Dear Michigan State: Declining a bowl invitation is permissible. Please consider. Sincerely, the rest of the B1G.
Prayers answered! South Carolina hits a 51-yard hail mary to Alshon Jeffrey for a touchdown. Bo Pelini will not be happy at the Blackshirts' execution, giving up a score like that at the end of the half. Big time momentum swing for Carolina as the half expires, although NU starts with the ball in the second half. South Carolina 16-13 Nebraska.
Turnover! After rolling the dice on a fourth and one, NU got down inside Carolina territory, but Martinez throws an ugly interception ending the drive and giving Carolina a shot at points before the half. Carolina has time for one hail mary before the end of the half.
Wow. Nebraska goes for it on fourth and one on NU's 29. Even though Burkhead made it, that was a terrible decision.
Special Teams FAIL! After the turnover stops Nebraska from scoring, Carolina hits a big pass play. But NU stops Carolina at the Nebraska 5, and then the Gamecocks miss a chippy field goal. What could have been a 14-point swing ends up keeping the status quo. Momentum, such a fickle mistress.
Turnover! Ameer Abdullah took a helmet to the ball, which popped up in the air. Once it came down from orbit, Carolina falls on it. NU squanders a red zone possession, and then Carolina hits a long pass to put the ball inside the Nebraska 20. Talk about a momentum swing.
Kenny Bell with a nice end around. More importantly, how awesome are Bell's socks?
Another sack (still fairly called a coverage sack) forces another South Carolina punt. Even without a decent pass rush, Nebraska's defense looks like its settled in well.
